The Water Crisis
Water is a necessity in the life of every person, but it has come to end the lives of
thousands of people because of the inadequate treat we are giving it. “Climate change is
disrupting weather patterns, leading to extreme weather events, unpredictable water availability,
exacerbating water scarcity and contaminating water supplies. Such impacts can drastically
affect the quantity and quality of water that children need to survive” (Water and the…). Matter
cannot be created nor destroyed, and we might think that water will never be insufficient to us,
humans, but the form in which water is given to humans is being solely transformed to cause
scarcity and harm to us and our biosphere. Plenty of research has been done to inform everyone
about the water crisis. Organizations such as UNICEF and The World Bank have provided
charts, videos, and explanations on how water has been used in poor manners by many
companies, institutions, and people. As a student who studies law, I know that my chosen field of
study plays a major role in maintaining a sustainable biosphere. Water litigation is a significant
factor that is helping people stop the harm that commercial enterprise does to water, and it is also
teaching people how to further help just by even making changes in their household. When it
comes to water crisis, everyone has a contribution.
The water crisis not only affects people, but it contributes to the stress of the water
systems in the majority of our ecosystems. Stressed water systems result in the lack of natural
vegetation and animals that live in an ecosystem. Rivers run through a variety of landscapes,
cultures, economies, and ecosystems; climate influences on rivers are less well-known but no
less significant. Our biosphere is in danger and that is because water is essential to life. Rivers
can be considered the earth’s veins.
All forms of life are dependent on clean water, which rivers
give. Two-thirds of the water we use for drinking comes from rivers. They are essential to our
food, transportation, and energy systems as well as to our economy. Before a tragedy requires
our attention, rivers may weave through our lives in numerous ways that go unnoticed. This past
months in the city I used to live, Nogales Sonora, there have been disastrous floods that have
harmed a significant amount of people. Moreover, we have seen droughts, wildfires, and rises in
temperatures around the globe that have put millions of lives in danger.
This issue is real. Organizations such as UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), The
World Bank, American Rivers, and others, have spoken about the consequences of the
mistreatment we are giving to water. In August 2021, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change published a report (cited on bibliography) that gives a detailed description of the reality
and risks of climate change that have been affected by water crisis. Moreover, the United Nations
Climate Change Conference (COP26), “
brought parties together to accelerate action towards the
goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change” (UN
Climate Change…). “Water Aid is a 30-year-old international non-profit that has helped over 20
million people gain access to clean water. The organization focuses on providing clean water to
the poorest communities through water projects and changing government policy in 26 countries
worldwide” (Seametrics). People are starting to take a
ction and inform others about how small
actions of everyone make big changes as a whole. However, we need the whole world taking
action to have drastic positive changes for a better future.
As I mentioned before, everyone can contribute to the water crisis. As a law student, I
never really imagined that my field of study had so much impact on the world’s water crisis.
However, after researching I found that law corporations file suits against big corporations to
stop environmental contamination, such as the Deepwater Horizon explosion that caused a
substantial disaster in the United States. I am also aware that the law can restrain private
