Summer Brooks
Milestone Two
Balancing Human Needs and Environmental Factors (Section II)
The case study that I chose is the Museum of Vesuvius Observatory. It is the world oldest
volcanological observatory, located in Ercolano, Italy.
In the location, there are a few earth system characteristics and processes that can affect
and be affected by the environment. For one, the area is located by a dormant, but massive
volcano. Although this volcano is considered dormant, we know that it can still erupt at any
given moment. There are also many earthquakes that occur in this area, with 4 of them reaching
over a magnitude of 6.0 since 1900 (allquakes.com, 2023). Lastly, tsunamis occur. In the past,
some of the tsunamis that occurred were so major that it killed thousands and destroyed cities
(Volcano World, 2018).
There are supposedly over 700 locations where human activity can trigger earthquakes,
with some of them reaching as high as a magnitude of 7.9 (Wonderpolis, 2023). The human
activity that can cause this is fluid injection, which increases the fluid pressure in fault zones,
causing those faults to loosen and fail when an earthquake arises (USGS.gov, 2015). Another
human activity that can cause this is wastewater injection, which is when water that is too salty
or polluted, is disposed of in manner that are not safe and ends up being injected deep into
underground wells located below aquifers that provide clean drinking water (USGS.gov, 2015).
These activities can trigger earthquakes, and earthquakes can trigger both tsunamis and volcanic
eruptions. With this in mind, project managers might mitigate the environmental risks for this
location by calling for government officials to step in and force certain companies to do business
elsewhere, in an area that cannot trigger an eruption. They can consider the are a conservation
area also.
Humans cannot go along with performing activities that heavily interact with the
environment. Eventually the earth will succumb to the pressure, often taking down anything in
it’s path. For example, cutting down thousands of trees leaves animals without food and/or
shelter, causing those animals to die off or repopulate elsewhere. The animals dying off can
create an overgrowth in the population of critters and insects. The animals relocating to the new
location can cause that location to be overpopulated and lack resources.
This project can cause useful companies to have to relocate, which can make the
population become scarce with certain products or services. However, it is important that the
project is done so that humans can understand the risk that come with residing in the area. What
can be done is more outsourcing for certain products and services to ensure that the community
is not putting themselves at a greater risk of being involved in fatal natural occurrences.
