Calculate patch metrics to fill the tables below for the following landscape with patches of
forest (labeled as “1”), water (labeled as “2”) and agriculture (labeled as “3”).
Each cell
has the dimensions of 1x1km.
Small numbers in the cells outside the landscape are
provided for reference to make this easier.

(8 pts) Using patch density as the indicator of fragmentation, rank the three cover types
from the most to the least fragmented. Comment on which class is the “most
fragmented” based on this ranking and briefly discuss how fragmentation may impact
mobile animal species living in this habitat.

(18 pts) Calculate shape index of the largest patch for each of the three classes using the
shape inde formula from the lecture. Perimeter calculation should include external edge
of a patch, and in case the patch has holes in it – also the internal edge of these holes.
