Lab 4 experiment - Weather and the Water Cycle Materials you will need to provide to conduct the experiment: Two jars (glass cups, or shot glasses or canning jars will work) Small glass plate or dish Small rock (to place in one of the jars) Food coloring (blue, red, or green) Water Tape (masking tape, duct tape or electrical tape will work. Clear tape too, but you may need to use a lot of it to properly seal the two jars) ice cubes a sunny location outside Experiment: WEATHER AND THE WATER CYCLE The Hydrologic Cycle is the continuous circulation of water near or at the Earth’s surface. In this experiment, you will examine how weather is linked to the circulation of water through the hydrologic cycle by constructing a simple model of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere to explore how energy drives weather and the water cycle. PROCEDURE 1. Fill one of your glass jars about half full of hot tap water. 2. Add one or two drops of food coloring to the water in the jar, then carefully swirl it around to mix. This represents sur face water. 3. Find a small rock that will fit into your jar. Place the piece of rock in the middle of the jar so it is surrounded by the water. Some of the rock should be sticking out of the water. The rock represents dry land. 4. Invert the second jar and place it over mouth of the jar containing the water and rock. Tape these two jars together at their openings with tape. Tape them well so that no air can get in or out of the jars. 5. Carefully move your model to a sunny windowsill or other location that receives direct sunlight (outside or a bright lamp if rainy). Take a photo of your experiment setup to include with the post-lab questions. 6. Fill a dish with ice cubes (or an ice pack) and place it on top of your jar model experiment. The dish and the top jar represent the atmosphere. Take another photo of your experiment setup at this point to include with the post-lab questions.
7. Record your observations of the initial conditions of your model in Table 1 on the Experiment Data Sheet. 8. Wait 30 minutes and observe your model again. Record your observations in Table 1. 9. Wait 30 more minutes (a total of 1 hour) and observe your model one more time. Record your observations in Table 1. 10. Complete the Post-Lab questions. Experiment Data Sheet Table 1.
