1. a. What is the name of the volcano? Great Sitkin
b. What does its color code mean (the key is at the bottom of the map)? Watch/Orange
c. By clicking several times on the volcano, you will open a new page just for that volcano. From that page, open the daily update (that may take several clicks, too). What does the daily update say about your volcano’s activity? “
Lava effusion likely continues; elevated surface temperatures”
d. If you were the geologist in charge of issuing the warning levels for the volcanoes, based
on the information on the daily update: i. Would you have issued this level of warning for your volcano? Why? I would have issued the watch warning for Great Sitkin since there are elevated surface temperatures, it is important to keep watch on this volcano to track if it will erupt and be prepared for ashfall.
ii. Who is the scientist in charge of the updates (bottom of the daily update)? Hint:
if you chose a volcano in Hawaii, then this is difficult to find and you should email the instructor for additional instructions. The Alaska Volcano Observatory, AVO
iii. “Google” this scientist. Why is this person qualified to be in charge? AVO was formed in 1988, and uses federal, state, and university resources to monitor and study Alaska's hazardous volcanoes, to predict and record eruptive activity, and to mitigate volcanic hazards to
life and property. There are multiple scientists at AVO who monitor this volcano.
2. Yellowstone
a.
What tools are they using to monitor the volcano there? Modern seismic and GPS networks of YVO.
b.
What other tools are available that you did not list above? Remote sensing, satellite, thermal imaging, cameras, ground vibration, earthquakes and lahar sensors, surveying, deformation, tiltmeter, gas airborne, and ground.
c.
Make a hypothesis about why they are not using those tools at Yellowstone. National park service was made to preserve and protect the land. If most of these tools were implemented within the parks then it will be disruptive to the natural ecosystem. Part 2:
3. What symbol and color indicate that a volcano is active? Yellow, orange, and red triangles.
4. Name 4 volcanoes that are currently active. Kilauea, La Palma, Pavlof, Canlaon
5. Click on the symbol of one of the active volcanoes (choose a different one than Part 1). Villarrica
a. Follow one of the links to more information about the volcano, like a webcam of the eruption. What did you find? Two webcams of the volcano, heat signal, heat sensor, earthquakes within 30km.
b. If you were in charge of this website, would you classify this volcano as active? What data did you base your classification on? I would classify this volcano as active because it has an active lava lake within its crater, the webcam, and heat signal.
c. Type the name of this volcano in your favorite internet search engine. Do any other websites think this volcano is active? What are they using to tell if it is active? https://volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?vn=357120
satellite data.
Part 3:
6. What type of volcano is Mount Adams, based on its size and shape? Stratovolcano
7. Make a hypothesis: Which side of Mount Adams will the volcanic lava or ash flow on the next time an eruption occurs? Volcanic lava or ash will flow on the north side if an eruption occurs.
a. What human features are downhill in that direction that could be destroyed in the next eruption? HINT: you may have to look very far downhill. Roads, restaurants, houses
8. What type of volcano is Mount St. Helens, based on its size and shape? Stratovolcano
9. Make a hypothesis: Which side of Mount St. Helens did the volcanic lava or ash go during the
last eruption? The volcanic lava or ash from Mount St, Helens went down the north side.
10. Make a hypothesis: Which side of Mount St. Helens will the volcanic lava or ash will go on the next time an eruption occurs? If an eruption occurs, the volcanic lava or ash will go down the
north side of Mount St. Helens.
a. What human features are downhill in that direction that could be destroyed in the next eruption? HINT: you may have to look very far downhill. Roads, bridges, campsites, towns - houses, restaurants 11. What type of volcano is Kilauea, based on its size and shape? Shield volcano
12. Notice that the parking lot is on the south side of the crater, near the 1921 lava flows. If you were designing this National Park, where would you put the parking lot for visitors who want to see the crater? I would put it on the left side (East) of the crater.
13. Notice the Visitor Center, hotel and art gallery are located northeast of the crater. Do you think they are far enough away from the crater to avoid damage? Yes with satellite area ia green
14. Scroll around the map in the area of the crater. What other marked features indicate that this
volcano is still active? Multiple craters can erupt from several locations
15. What type of volcano is Sunset Crater, based on its size and shape? Cinder cone
16. Looking at the different views, what clues tell you if this volcano is active or not? It's inactive but it is located in an active volcanic field with hundreds of other volcanos in Arizona.
