Geology Lab Exam 1 Study Guide The exam will consist of up to 15 rocks and minerals (the samples will be straightforward). You will be allowed to use the flow charts to identify the minerals and rocks that you used during the labs. I don’t expect you to pick out igneous vs. metamorphic vs. sedimentary, there will be text on the Canvas quiz question denoting important information about the sample. In addition to rock and mineral identification, there will also be short answer and multiple choice questions on this exam. Be familiar with the information provided within the chapters of your lab manuals. (REREAD CHAPTERS, review HW, quizzes, labs & lecture notes). For this exam you must be able to define or know the following: Mineral Vesicular Felsic/Mafic Viscosity Igneous rock Sedimentary rock Metamorphic rock Cleavage Streak Hardness Luster Moh’s hardness scale Intrusive igneous rock Extrusive igneous rock Porphyritic Phaneritic Aphanitic Foliation Lithification Bioclastic Precipitated Clastic Fracture Glassy Scientific Method What are the steps to the scientific method? (Don’t just know the names, know what they mean) Define hypothesis, theory, and law Describe examples of the scientific method in action ROCKS AND MINERALS You will get points for rock type (1), knowing how it formed (1), observations made and written down (2) and mineral identification (1). As you can see, it is just as important, if not more important, to write down your observations than it is to identify the rock. Minerals In defining mineral properties, you would be given a mineral identification chart, and be asked to make the following observations and determinations: What is the approximate hardness of the sample? What is the streak of the sample? What is the luster of the sample? What type of cleavage or fracture does the sample exhibit? Given the following flow chart, name the mineral
Igneous Rocks Be able to make observations and identify the following minerals and some of their key properties. This doesn’t necessarily mean that all of these rocks and minerals will be on the exam. Be able to determine cooling history and environment (intrusive/extrusive) Be able to make observations, classify and name igneous rocks based on COLOR and TEXTURE into the following groups: Sedimentary Rocks Be able to make observations, classify and name sedimentary rocks based on GRAIN SIZE, ROUNDING, SORTING AND MINERALOGY. In this case, you should be able to observe And estimate the grain size (large, medium, fine) Whether the grains are rounded or angular, whether the grains are poorly or well sorted If the rock contains rock fragments (dark pieces), quartz (gray-ish), or feldspar (peach/pink) Describe the depositional environment for the hand sample. Metamorphic Rocks You should be able to identify the metamorphic rock types we classified in class and the major minerals they are composed of. o Quartzite, Marble, etc. Be able to explain foliated and non-foliated rocks. Be able to determine the parent rock of a hand sample. Distinguish contact metamorphism from regional metamorphism.
