ERSC 1P01 –Planet Earth I – Metamorphic Rocks ASSIGNMENT DUE 31 hours after your ‘IN PERSON LAB’ i.e. 11:55 PM the next day Objectives: Understand how temperature and pressure can deform rocks below the Earth’s surface. Relate texture and mineral composition to previously learned rock types. Development of scientific observation and descriptive skills. General Instructions: 1. Go to the Lab Material>Lab 6: Metamorphic rocks page in Sakai. The two main Metamorphic Rock textures will be explained and demonstrated further in mini video demonstrations. A PDF document describing Metamorphic Rocks is also available for you to download. Make sure to watch each video to fully understand how to distinguish between the Foliated and Non-Foliated textures of Metamorphic rocks. The first step to determining the Metamorphic rock name will be to determine what type of Metamorphic rock texture you are observing. You may want to take notes as you watch the videos! 2. We will be reviewing the Metamorphic Rock types during the IN PERSON lab session. You may also bring your own laptop/tablet AND HEADPHONES to your IN PERSON lab sessions to rewatch and review the videos. 3. There is this ONE assignment question document provided for you. This document contains all of the questions. At the END of this document is a Metamorphic Rock Table which lists the questions in a TABLE format. 4. There is also a Metamorphic ROCK ID KEY provided for you in a separate PDF document. The ID KEY contains information on how to identify each Metamorphic rock as well as overall descriptions for the Metamorphic rocks and their ‘parent rock’ names. Use these tables to determine the METAMORPHIC ROCK NAME! You may print the documents and bring paper copies to your IN PERSON lab OR you may wish to work directly from your own computer/tablet. (NOTE: Paper copies will NOT be provided in your lab session!) Note: The descriptions in the METAMORPHIC ID KEY provide overall-general desciptions of the rock types. Make sure to descibe only what you see in the presented sample (do not add information that is not there or marks will be deducted).
1 ERSC 1P01 (Planet Earth I) – Metamorphic Rock lab (enter answers in Tests and Quizzes tool) *The metamorphic rock samples will be provided in your ‘IN PERSON’ lab session. You must attend your scheduled ‘IN PERSON’ lab session in order to answer the questions and submit this assignment. If you do not attend an ‘IN PERSON’ lab session but still attempt to submit answers to this assignment this will be considered a violation of Brock’s academic misconduct policy . SUBMITTING YOUR ASSIGNMENT AFTER YOUR IN PERSON LAB SESSION 1. The Metamorphic rock lab will become available for each individual lab section in the Test and quizzes tool at 5:00 pm on the day of your Scheduled IN PERSON lab and will be due by 11:55 pm the following day. 2. When you have answered all of your assignment questions you will then go to enter the answers in the ‘Test and quizzes’ tool. Every student will be answering a unique combination of 27 questions randomly drawn from a bank of questions that you have just answered. You may save your answers and go back to answering them at a later time. However, if you ‘submit’ your answers and go back to ‘resubmit’ at a later time– you will be presented with an entirely new randomized draw of questions to answer! 3. Each IN PERSON lab section will also be given a unique set of eight (8) questions to answer. The questions and associated rock and mineral samples will ONLY be provided during the IN PERSON lab session. METAMORPHIC ROCK Assignment Questions 1-42 (This document is for rough work ONLY! This document DOES NOT need to be handed in! ONLY ANSWERS SUBMITTED IN THE “TEST AND QUIZZES” TOOL WILL BE MARKED) Answer the question for the specific METAMORPHIC rock sample provided! How to answer questions in the ‘Test and quizzes’ tool? 1. Some of the questions will have ‘multiple choice’ answers available for you to choose from. ‘Click’ the correct answer from the list provided. 2. Some of the questions will require you to write in your answer in either a ‘short answer’ format. You DO NOT need to answer using sentences. 1-3 word answers are acceptable. REMINDER! Please answer all questions before entering your answers under the Tests & Quizzes section in Sakai. Each question is worth 1 mark. Total marks = 35 ( 27 mks from random draw of questions + 8 mks for questions from each in person lab section). The following is the list of questions that you will be answering for this assignment. We have also provided you with a Metamorphic Rock Table at the end of this document.
