a.
Download and open up the Earth’s Tectonics Plates .kmz file. Then, turn on
the Earthquakes and Volcanoes layers from the previous assignment. Look at
where plate boundaries, volcanoes, and earthquake occur, zooming in on the
New Zealand to American Samoa region. Explain in 3-5 sentences how they
are related to one another. Take a screen shot of your observations.

frequency of earthquakes and volcanoes in the area running from New
Zealand to American Samoa. Complex plate interactions, mainly the
subduction of the Pacific Plate underneath the Australian Plate, are what
identify this region. Volcanic activity is produced by subduction, resulting in
the formation of volcanic arcs like the Kermadec and Tonga arcs.
b.
Download and turn on the Age of Ocean Floors .kmz file. Look at the ages of
the seafloor in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In which ocean is the
plate is spreading the fastest? How do you know?
Answer:
The Atlantic Ocean is expanding faster than the Pacific Ocean. The
Atlantic has a considerably higher pace of plate spreading due to its generally
younger seabed, based on the gradient of seafloor age away from the mid-
ocean ridges in each ocean.
