Exercise 1 - Plate Tectonics DISCOVERING PLATE BOUNDARIES Exercise 1 _______________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________ LEARNING GOALS Explain the concept of plate tectonics Describe the characteristics of typical plate boundaries. Relate the distribution of earthquakes, volcanoes , age and topography to processes operating at plate boundaries. Classify plate boundaries according to plate motions and compositions. You will describe the characteristics from 4 separate specialty PDSV Seismology (Earthquakes) Age of Sea Floor Rocks Volcanology Topography (Height of Mountains and Depth of Sea Floor) Watch part of Lab Presentation together to introduce Plate Tectonics Theory. Look at the map of the Plate Boundaries. The plate boundaries have been identified in this map and classified into four types of boundaries based on the plate motions and features such as volcanoes, topography , age of sea floor and concentrations of earthquake epicenters. Look in turn at each of the maps and answer the questions. Look at all the maps for one boundary± Boundary 1 before looking at the ne[t boundary. In Week 1 you will complete Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Age of Sea Floor Rocks for Boundaries 1 - 4 In Week 2 you will complete Topography for Boundaries 1 - 4 Watch the Lab Presentation together and discuss Boundary 1 and 3 Complete the paragraphs on Boundary 1 and 3 The Lab must be submitted on 0oodle by end of the Lab period in Week 2.
Exercise 1 - Plate Tectonics N ame: Section: Boundary 1 Boundary 2 Seismology Do the earthquakes follow the plate boundary? e g Follow PB Are earthquakes concentrated in a narrow band or spread across a broad area? Are they dense or sparse? Is the pattern straight, curved, zigzag, clumped? Are they along the plate boundary or away from the plate boundary? If on one side: Is this the continent or ocean side? Or both ocean and both continent? What is the depth of the earthquakes? (Shallow, intermediate, deep). If they vary say how, which side of plate boundary (continent /ocean)? What is the magnitude of the earthquakes? Low/high? Are the earthquakes evenly or irregularly distributed? Age of Oceanic Rocks Do the youngest or oldest rocks follow the boundary? e g youngest follow PB What is the age of the rocks? How does the age change on each side of the boundary? Is this symmetrical or asymmetrical? Are the age bands wide or narrow? Is the pattern straight, curved, zigzag, clumped? Are the age bands evenly or irregularly distributed?
Exercise 1 - Plate Tectonics Boundary 1 Boundary 2 Topography Are there mountains on the land or in the ocean? e g Mountains in the ocean Are the mountains on both sides or on one side of the boundary? Do they follow the boundary? Are they symmetrical around the boundary? Give the height +oZ d oes the height vary? Are the mountains wide or narrow? Is the pattern straight, curved, zigzag, clumped? Are there areas oI greater than aYerage deSth in the ocean? Are they both sides of the boundary? Do they follow the boundary? Are they symmetrical around the boundary? Give the depth Does the depth vary? Are they wide/ narrow? Is the pattern straight, curved, zigzag, clumped? Volcanoes Do the volcanoes follow the plate boundary? e g Follow PB Do volcanoes have a narrow or wide distribution? Are they dense or sparse? Is the pattern straight, curved, zigzag, clumped? Are they along the plate boundary or away from the plate boundary? If on one side: Is this the continent or ocean side? Or either ocean or both continent? What is the type of volcano (shield, strato, and caldera)? What is the explosivity of the volcanoes? Low/high? Are the volcanoes evenly or irregularly distributed?
