Journal Reflection: Submission 2: Keeping Everyone Healthy (5%) 1. When you have a common communicable infectious disease like a cold or the flu, what do you do to protect others (eg, members of your family, co-workers, etc) from catching your illness? Based on content covered in Module 4, would you do anything differently? If so, what? If not, why not? To ensure the safety of everyone around me, I would take several important measures. Firstly, I would always wear a mask as most communicable diseases can be prevented through proper infection control policies. If I sneeze without a mask, the germs created can become a direct source of transmission for others. Wearing a mask can break the chain of infection as it stops the virus from finding a new host to infect, thus preventing people around me from getting ill. Secondly, I would carry hand sanitizer at all times and use it before touching anything as many germs can be spread through indirect transmission via infected objects. This would break another chain of infection as it stops the virus from finding a surface to transfer to. Overall, I would follow the infection control protocols introduced in module 4, such as hand hygiene, cleaning, and disinfecting, to reduce the number of germs that can spread in the environment. By adopting these simple infection control policies, the spread of diseases can be prevented and the safety of everyone around me can be ensured. 2B. If you have not experienced working with children in a group setting before, pick a program (eg, infant-toddler, preschool, etc) in which you would like to work, and explain what steps you would take to protect yourself from infection before you started working here and also while you are working there. Briefly describe TWO things you have learned from course content that you would want to ensure are part of the center’s health and safety policies and practices. I want to work in a preschool program to gain experience working with preschool-age children. It's essential to understand infection control in a child-care setting to provide a safe environment for both the children and me. The first policy to protect children from germs is to promote hand
hygiene. Infants and toddlers are prone to gastrointestinal infections as they often put small things in their mouth. So, it's crucial to teach them the importance of proper hand hygiene. I will create fun activities to help preschoolers and toddlers develop the proper technique and understanding of hand hygiene. The second policy is to emphasize cleaning and disinfection of the child-care center. Tables, toys, and bathroom/change tables can harbor germs. Proper disinfection of these areas will ensure that everything children handle is as germ-free as possible. I will also clean shelves and toy boxes as they can carry germs and soil from toddlers and children. To protect myself, I will practice hand hygiene and use hand sanitizers after touching soil or dirty objects. These practices will largely eliminate the potential spread of germs from objects to me, thus eliminating the transfer of germs. 3. As you move forward in your placement/work/career, identify ONE practice you will engage in to ensure the health of children in your care and the staff you work with. To promote the health of children and staff, I would ensure that everyone's immunizations are up to date. Even though we can't completely eliminate viruses and bacteria in the childcare center, there's always a chance that they can spread to a host (children or staff) and cause illness. If infection control measures aren't properly implemented, the childcare center can become a dangerous environment for both staff and children. Therefore, it's crucial for me to promote proper immunization for staff and children in the childcare center. This can be done by informing staff and parents about the necessary immunizations children should have, from staff training to child registration. By doing this, children can play in a safe environment, and the chance of viruses and bacteria being spread in the childcare center will decrease. Overall, promoting immunization can create an environment where children can enjoy playing, and staff can enjoy working, without the fear of illnesses spreading.
