NEEDS ASSESSMENT 1 HMSV 440W: Task 1 Needs Assessment Kira M. Massenburg Old Dominion University Department of Counseling and Human Services HMSV 440W PROGRAM-DEV-IMPLEMENT-FUNDING Francisca Rivas January 28, 2024 Task 1: Needs Assessment The Program I have decided to conduct my project on is H.O.P.E mentoring program. The girls group mentoring program H.O.P.E is an acronym standing for helping others pursue excellence, which is the core mission of the group. This program aims to ultimately help young black and brown girls (ages 6-18) on building confidence and gaining valuable skills that will lead them into adolescence/adulthood. The problem of low-self esteem is extensive among preadolescent and adolescent girls in the United States, especially within culturally underrepresented populations. According to a survey conducted by the Dove self-esteem fund, approximately 41 percent of African-American teens were struggling with issues of low self- image. This same survey also showed that the main determining factors of this were their social conditioning and daily interactions with friends, family and other peer groups. Research conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute and other organizations also suggest that low self-
NEEDS ASSESSMENT 2 esteem can lead to potential risky behaviors such as substance abuse issues, unsafe sexual behavior, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, or any self-mutilative behaviors. To assess the full extent of the needs of the girls entering the program I would implement an anonymous survey that asks questions regarding things such as self-esteem, body image, substance use, suicidal ideations, etc. This data would be used to further evaluate program implementations to address the needs of the girls. To address the needs is by creating enrichment programs that are specifically tailored for each age group. Within these programs the objective would be to plan and create activities and seminars that help build character, self-esteem, and develop strong leadership skills within girls. I would also want to strive to change the interactions these girls are having with the people around them and encourage open dialogue during sessions so that members can discuss and find commonality with one another. Some community partners the agency could work with to help address the need are local community colleges and universities, job corps, public and private schools, and other leadership centered organizations.
