D223 – UKM1 – Performance Assessment 1 A. Examine a healthcare organization that has significance to you, using the American
Hospital Directory
(AHD) and the Care Compare websites.
A1. Identify the selected healthcare organization from the AHD by name and location. The healthcare organization selected from the American Hospital Directory (AHD) website is Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, Colorado
A2. Significance of Chosen Healthcare Organization I chose Parkview Medical Center because I have worked there since August of 2017. I began my nursing career at Parkview as a graduate nurse on a cardiac telemetry unit and have progressed over the last 7 years into a critical care nurse manager. Parkview itself plays a pivotal
role for not only the community of Pueblo, Colorado but for the entire southern region of Colorado as well. I have grown up as a nurse at this hospital and am vested in ensuring Parkview
is not only providing high quality patient care but is also teaching and raising the next generation
of nurses to provide exceptional patient care. A3. Type of Facility and services it typically provides.
Per the AHD, Parkview Medical Center is a short-term acute care (STAC) hospital. This facility has a total of 268 beds. The goal of Parkview and most STAC facilities is to provide the patient with complete, comprehensive care over a short period of time through both inpatient and outpatient services. Parkview Medical Center provides a wide range of services from cardiovascular services such as cardiac Cath lab, cardiac rehab, cardiac surgery, carotid stenting, coronary interventions, vascular intervention, and vascular surgery to emergency services. Other services provided by Parkview Medical Center include Electroencephalography (EEG) testing, sleep studies, oncology services such as chemotherapy, orthopedic services such as joint replacement and spine surgery, inpatient and robotic surgery, intensive care unit, hemodialysis, home health, lithotripsy (ESWL), obstetrics, physical and speech therapy, wound care, and rehabilitation. Parkview Medical Center also provides a wide array of testing or imaging services

including but not limited to radiology, nuclear medicine, and imaging (
Parkview Medical Center,
2024).
A3a. Type of Control Parkview Medical Center’s type of control is listed as a voluntary nonprofit, other organization. Nonprofit organizations such as Parkview Medical center are not required to pay most federal, state, and county taxes because they must serve the “healthcare needs of the community” by offering services such as charity care. This includes providing healthcare services
to essentially everyone, even those who cannot afford to pay for their care. Whereas for-profit organizations are required to pay federal, state, and county taxes and have access to capital from investors. A nonprofit uses its revenue to reinvest in the hospital for operations, rather than profiting investors. Not-for profit organizations need to prove they are a community benefit through their tax forms to maintain their nonprofit status and tax emptions (
Masterson
, 2017). A4. Discussion of the Healthcare Organizations Overall Star Rating Parkview Medical Center received an overall star rating of three (3) and a patient survey rating of two (2) according to the Care Compare website (
Medicare.gov
, n.d.). As of July 2018, the overall star rating is composed of fifty-seven (
57) individual measures of quality to form a total of seven (7) group scores. Those groups consist of Mortality, Readmission, Safety of Care, Patient Experience, Effectiveness of Care, Timeliness of Care, and Efficient Use of Medical Imaging. The first four (4) groups are each assigned a relative weight of 22% and the last three (3) a weight of 4% each to make the total weights add to 100% (Nerenz et al., 2019)
. The patient
survey rating according to the Care Compare website, measures patients’ experiences of their hospital care through surveys after discharge. Those surveys include topics such as how well nurses communicated, how responsive hospital staff were to their needs, and the cleanliness and quietness of the hospital environment (
Medicare.gov
, n.d.).
A4a. Additional Source of Quality Data on Healthcare Organizations The Joint Commission’s quality check and quality report resources offer an additional source of quality data on healthcare organizations. The Joint Commission was founded in 1951 and is considered one of the nation’s largest and oldest standard setting accrediting healthcare bodies. Joint Commission accreditation is based upon more than two-hundred and fifty (250) 3
standards that focus on patient safety and quality and is updated regularly to reflect the advances in healthcare and medicine
(
Quality Check
, n.d.). A5. Organizational Ethics Reflected in the Type of Facility and Control Type As listed in Parkview Medical Center’s “Mission, Vision, & Values,” the following are directly related to their voluntary, non-profit status. 1.
Parkview Medical Center provides patients and their families with information about charity care along with various community and financial assistance programs. One specific example includes at admission, the nurse gathers information to assess the patient’s socioeconomic and
financial needs. Upon inputting the data into the electronic medical record or EMR the nurse will then be alerted to enter specific interdisciplinary consultations (i.e. Case Management), to provide the patient with additional community or financial resources if appropriate. Parkview also has a discount policy that applies to the poor, un and underinsured. The hospital’s credit department works closely with individuals and families to find solutions that work for both the patient and their families. 2. As a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, Parkview Medical Center is committed to operate in
a manner that furthers its charitable purposes and which complies with all requirements applicable to tax exempt healthcare organizations. “It is the mission of Parkview Medical Center to provide the highest quality health care to the people we serve” regardless of their ability to pay. One specific example is that Parkview Medical Center provides a wide array of community services for free ranging from health education, community-based clinical services, to community building activities, health-related scholarships, and supporting sixty-three (63) organizations from contributions to nursing programs. Parkview Medical Center also recognizes the need for charity care and according to their website provided $46,699,879 in charity care for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022.
A6. The Nurse’s Role in Value-Based Care (VBC) Nurses do not typically work on the financial or fiscal side of healthcare organizations. They do, however, play a pivotal role in value-based care (VBC). Value-Based care can be described as keeping healthcare costs down while providing quality care to patients. The Value in VBC focuses on quality of care, provider performance, and patient experience. Nurses participate in VBC in a variety of ways regularly. Some examples are nurses regularly perform 4
