When did the first cases of known COVID-19 occur and what were their characteristics including the source of their infection? What was considered the initiation even of the Pandemic in the United States? The first cases of COVID-19 in the United States occurred in January and February 2020 in travelers from China’s Hubei Province, where the virus was first recognized, and their household Contacts What were the reasons the CDC indicated the spread amplified? During the month of March, the CDC saw a spike in COVID-19 within the United States. There were many factors that contributed to the amplified spread. For example, large gatherings, population density, and traveling all contributed to the intensified spread of COVID-19. Large gatherings include social, cultural, and professional events. Population density includes overpopulated cities, states, or counties, it also includes overcrowded schools and public places. Travel includes arriving and departing other countries or cruises with ongoing transmissions. Other factors that may have been an influence is improper sanitation measures and seasonal influenza. According to Schuchat (2020) “Attendance at professional and social events, introduction into facilities or settings prone to amplification, and challenges in virus detection all contributed to rapid acceleration of transmission during March.” Schuchat, A. (2020). Public Health Response to the Initiation and Spread of Pandemic COVID- 19 in the United States, February 24–April 21, 2020. MMWR. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 69(18), 551-556. What are some of the methods attempted to bring spread under control by public health agencies in the US? Due to the increased spread of COVID-19 in March public health agencies implemented some health measures to mitigate the spread. Those health measures included travel restrictions, quarantine measures, stay-at-home order, disinfecting measures, personal protective gear, testing, and social distancing. Travel restrictions for entering the U.S. was implemented for non-U.S. citizens and permanent residents arriving from high transmission areas were, warnings were issued to avoid nonessential international travel as well as all cruise ship travel. Quarantine measures were implemented for arriving international travelers with known exposure to locations and settings of concern (Schuchat, A. 2020). Local, state, and federal authorities issued stay-at- home orders, and closed schools and nonessential workplaces in hopes to slow spread of COVID-19. Cleaning and disinfection protocols were recommended to keep areas clean from germs that may increase the risk of COVID-19. Personal Protective equipment such as, face coverings and gloves were advised to guide the public in hoped to reduce the spread. Social distancing included physically isolating those who were ill from those not ill, and physical distancing in public areas. Testing was then implemented to in hopes to reduce the spread of COVID-19 be identifying and isolating those who were positive with the infection. Schuchat, A. (2020). Public Health Response to the Initiation and Spread of Pandemic COVID- 19 in the United States, February 24–April 21, 2020. MMWR. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 69(18), 551-556.
