Melanie Bioski HUN 1201: Human Nutrition  Professor Ruth Davies Fall 2023 9/9/2023  Assignment 1: Assessing Reliable Sources Part 1: Website #1: Nutrition.gov This website seeks to provide nutritional information to the general public. For example, this would be where the public schools get some of the most up to date health and nutritional information in order to make a health school menu for kids. It provides food safety information and nutritional education. It is run by USDA science. This first website does meet all the 5 W’s and I would give this a 9 out of 10. It first and foremost a reliable source and provides a wealth of information. It is easy to follow, accessible, backed by scientific information provided by the department of agriculture and funded by the government. It receives a 9 out of 10 because finding the information to answer the 5 W’s you do have to go searching a bit for it. Website # 2: Nutrition and healthy eating Nutrition basics - Mayo Clinic The Mayo Clinic has always been a reliable resource for scientific information. It provides information from scientific experts a large variety of health topics. It meets all the 5 w’s. one of the 5 W’s is who funds the site, the following “ Mayo Clinic does not endorse companies or products. Advertising revenue supports our not-for-profit mission.” (4) Confirms that this site funding through non-profit and by donations making it a trustworthy source. The sources for which they find all their information is easily accessible. With a 10 out of 10, I would say that this site is reliable. Website #3: Nutrition (who.int) Much Like the Nutrition. Gov website this site it funding through memberships for a large variety of states. It is not privately funded and seeks to provide health and wellness information for much of the population. It provides people with the most up to date health information as possible. They have many verified sources of where they get the information they provide to the public. I would give this site at a 10 out of 10 this site is very reliable. Website # 4: Optimum Nutrition | Homepage
This website while it does provide some nutritional information, I would say it is not a reliable source. The information they provide is not backed by any notable scientific fact. They also provide a disclaimer in the fine print at the very bottom of the page “These statements have not been evaluated by the food and drug administration...”(6) this shows that much of their information has not be evaluated or come for a trusted source. This site seeks to sell you on how their supplements can better improve or enhance your health in a variety of ways. Based on the information and disclaimer I would rate this a 1 out of 10, not reliable. Website # 5: Nutrition Journal | Home page (biomedcentral.com) While I thought this would be a very reliable source of information, it was very difficult to track down the answers to the 5 W’s. However, this website does provide you with a lot of nutritional information form published articles that are written by many scientific experts. The site does have stringent guidelines that one would have to follow for one’s article to be published. I would give this site and 8 out of 10. Part 2: Paul Saladino Md. I first came across this expert through my husband decided to start the Carnivore diet . He went searching for all the information he could find and he found him to be the most honest and consist as far as information. He also found and follows him on Tick Tok. So that left me a bit skeptical as to his validity and reliability. I decided to choose him so that I could better be informed and assist my husband in his health endeavor. Paul Saladio is a double board-certified Md. He graduated medical school and obtained his board certification as a physician nutrition specialist. He is also a published author of a book called “The Carnivore Code” and “The Carnivore Code cookbook.” And has a podcast “ Fundamental Health ”. He currently a practicing physician at a private practice in San Diago as well. Based on his credentials, he is currently a practicing physician and practices his own nutritional advice in his own life and the information he provides with the scientific evidence to back it, I do now find him to be a reliable nutrition expert. Antonette Hardie MS, RD, LD I came upon this registered dietitian when I was reading an article about The Carnivore diet. The article was titled Carnivore Diet: Meal Plan, Safety and Benefits By   Elaine K. Howley   and   Claire Wolters . Antonette Hardie has a Master’s degree in science focused in dietetics. She is a Registered dietitian and currently works as a dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to provide diet and nutrition counseling for pre-transplant recipients. I chose this particular dietitian as her point of view in regards to the carnivore diet provided a helpful balance as to the benefits
