OCCUPATIONAL ENGAGEMENT AND THEORIES OF PRACTICE OCT5145 SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT-APPLICATION OF THEORY TO CLIENT EXPLANATION OF ASSIGNMENT This course has prompted you to explore broad theories of occupation as well as more focused theories of practice in occupational therapy. Understanding how theory is applied in practice will enable you to be client centered, holistic, and systems oriented when you begin your own professional journey. This assignment will provide you with an opportunity to apply your new knowledge of theory and practice models to a “client”—a character from a movie of your choosing living with a disability. You will be required to compare and contrast occupation-based models in order to choose an appropriate theoretical framework to guide your thinking about this “client.” You will describe two models and apply the main components of your preferred model to the client in depth. GENERAL ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES AND FORMATTING You will be working in small groups for this assignment. You will be permitted to choose your group and must sign up on BB. Groups will be no larger than 4 students and no smaller than 3 students. Each group will choose a movie in which the main character is living with a challenge or disability that impacts his/her participation in daily occupations. Some examples of movies are listed below. If you choose another movie, you must get approval from the course instructor. Please include your choice of movie on the sign-up sheet provided. ●
Still Alice ●
Temple Grandin ●
Theory of Everything ●
The Other Sister ●
Of the Mighty ●
My Left Foot ●
I am Sam ●
A Beautiful Mind The result of this work will be a poster presentation applying theory to your “client.” A template for your poster will be provided in the form of a PowerPoint slide. You are free to change the layout of the presentation as long as all of the required information is included. Some guidelines for creating high-
quality posters can be found on BB. As your group is working on the assignment, please complete your work in a Google document. Please color-code all individual contributions as you are working, and include a key. Create each section of the poster in the document before creating your final poster. Students will be required to submit a team contract with their final presentation. Faculty will review the contract and Google document to assess individual student participation in the group project.
You must cite at least 2 current (within the last 5 years) peer-reviewed references related to the model(s). Two is the minimum, meaning that you must cite more than two to receive full credit (see the rubric attached)
. References do NOT need to be included on the poster and may be submitted in a separate document on BB. You will be presenting your poster in a synchronous session face-to-face or ONLINE with a faculty member. At the time of the presentation, each student in your group should have a good command of all sections of the assignment. The faculty member will call on a student at random to present different aspects of your work. A schedule for presentations will be posted on BB. Grading for this assignment will follow the rubric attached to this activity description and will include both individual and group components.
