2.
What kind of study is this (study design)? This is an observational study and a cross-sectional design. 3.
What was the purpose of the study? What questions does it raise? The purpose of the study is to examine if meeting the PAG will decrease depression symptoms including sedentary time. And if high sedentary time increases depression symptoms despite meeting PAG. 4.
How does answering the research question(s) add something new to what is already known? If the study is a replication, why is that important? This study adds to the previous research in that this is the first to assess the impact of PAG compliance and sedentary behavior on depression to only use MVPA accumulated in bouts of 10 min. 5.
Sample: Who or what was studied? (Number and key characteristics) 3045 adults who were over the age of 18. 51.3% were women and over 74.1% were non-
Hispanic Whites. 6.
Measures: What are the variables being measured and how are they measured?
A variable is the patient health questionnaire that was used to measure depression symptoms, and what their scores were. Another is the demographics of the sample which could affect PA and sedentary time. PAG compliance, participants are either compliant or non-compliant. The amount of time the activity monitor was worn, and how much activity was counted for. 7.
Procedure: In sequential order, what were the major steps in performing the study? (From obtaining sample through analyzing data) Sample was obtained by individuals who were 18 years old or older and provided depression data and wore a physical activity monitor for at least 4 days. Participants filled out the PHQ-9 to measure depression symptoms. They were grouped into non-compliant and compliant with PAG and into none to mild depression or moderate to severe depression. An accelerometry was worn on participants’ hip for 7 days and measured PA and sedentary time. After 7 days the data was analyzed. 8.
Analysis: How is the data being analyzed (what type of statistical tests are being done)? Accelerometer data was analyzed by using the NHANES guidelines. The statistical data was analyzed using SPSS statistical software version 2.0. Weighted means and standard deviations were calculated for continuous and categorical variables. Logisitic regression was
used to see if there was interaction between SB and PAG on depression. 9.
Results: What were the main findings? (After analysis, what is the answer to the research question(s)) The results were that those who were non-compliant with PAGs and had high sedentary time had the highest depression severity score. Compared with those who were PAG compliant, and their sedentary time was the lowest had lower depression scores. 10.
Discussion and Conclusions: Do the findings support or refute the hypotheses? What does the author conclude? The author concludes that adults who are PAG compliant have lower depression symptoms, and those who were not compliant with high sedentary time had increased depression. It also concludes that adults that were PAG compliant and had high sedentary time still had decreased depression symptoms. These results do not support the hypothesis that high sedentary time regardless of PAG compliance would result in high rates of depression. 11.
Limitations: What cautions does the author raise about interpreting the study, and what do you think are important reservations? A major limitation the author mentions is that this study is cross-sectional, meaning that the PA and SB of the individuals with higher levels of depression could be a result from the depression. Another limitation is the accelerometer and not them being able to calculate resistance training. The last one is the demographic characteristics of the sample, with it being 74% non-Hispanic Whites, which is the majority of the population and sample. Other races view depression, SB, and PA differently. 12.
What particularly interesting or valuable things did you learn from reading the report?
What I found interesting in this study is that meeting PAG can decrease depression symptoms even with a high sedentary time. Although having a low sedentary time can have more benefits to your health, just meeting the guidelines can greatly reduce depression symptoms.
