ILSAINT, CHILDREN BEYOND BORDERS 2 Service Learning Preflection: Children Beyond our Borders What Are Your Doing at Your Service-Learning Site? At the non-profit organization, Children Beyond our Borders, students who are residing in underprivileged neighborhoods in Alachua County, Florida, are the focus. We help strive toward a removal of educational obstacles and to establish a foundation for development in the students. Through participation in this program, students are provided with opportunities to achieve academic achievement, professional development, and overall growth. The Organization tries their best to pair everyone with the same student throughout the whole semester. While working with my student during the first week, I learned that he is in 10 th grade and very intelligent. I helped him with assignments that were due for the week and he is a very quick learner. What Population are You Serving? The population for the organization are students from kindergarten up until 12 th grade. All the students who participate in this program are from underprivileged neighborhoods, it’s catered to students who don't have the capability to hire tutors. What Current Thoughts and Feelings Regarding your Service-learning this Semester? While completing my first week, I really enjoyed working with my student and engaging with other students that are around me. It's fantastic to see all of the students interacting and engaging in their work, even if it may get very loud with everything that's going on. Given that I have a strong interest in working with children, the fact that I am able to devote myself to this organization provides me a great deal of enjoyment.
