Webinar title:
TREATING EATING DISORDERS IN YOUNG CHILDREN
Speaker: Nicole Wavra MPH, RD, LD
Date of Presentation: May 16, 2024
What made you decide to take this webinar?
Selecting a topic or webinar proved to be somewhat difficult while searching for options.
However, I chose this one because the stigma associated with eating disorders is particularly
sensitive due to the guilt and shame that the sufferer experiences. Particularly concerning adults,
yet the subject matter pertains specifically to young children, requiring a distinct approach in
treatment. Considering that kids are very impressionable and influenced by a wide range of
factors. Particularly when they are still growing or are too young to make many decisions. This
topic therefore got me thinking about how to treat a younger patient and how I may still be
compassionate toward them while still giving them the greatest care.
Provide 2-3 main takeaways from the webinar.
1.
Experts in disorder eating are the professionals treating the child with ED, and
parents are the experts in their offspring.
2.
Weight gain or loss is not the progress achievement of the children progress to their
eating disorder getting better
3.
There are always several approaches to support the parent and encourage the child
as they both learn from and educate one another how to improve their
circumstances.

4.
Children's needs must be met in accordance with their current state of health and
what they are willing to learn to improve it, as pressuring a child to do anything
would either make their situation worse or have a negative influence on their ability
to recover in the future.
What surprised you about the webinar you chose?
To be quite honest, while I watched this webinar, I was surprised by a few things. First of all, I
was taken aback by the variety of approaches one might take while treating a child, depending on
what is required. particularly when a child's condition is willing to advance in collaboration with
both the parent and the physician. In addition, I found it fascinating that the parents were
encouraged to celebrate their child's accomplishments in addition to them. Because the parent
may occasionally become frustrated or discouraged that the child may not be progressing very
noticeably. However, any advancement must be pressed for, and it's critical to support the parent
and child on their path.
How might this information be useful in your area of professional practice/study?
I would answer both yes and no when asked if the material is in any way relevant to my
professional field of study. No, because I don't actually see many patients in physical therapy for
eating problems. However, yes, since I may eventually come into a patient who has a mobility
problem as a result of their eating disorder, and it is very essential to me to understand more
about how I may best meet their needs. Furthermore, in my opinion, it's crucial to be able to act
as a professional, encourage patients toward well-being, and accept parental support while
dealing with young children and taking in mind their needs as well to be able to help wit their
growth and development.
