Work is undertaken independently, according to the philosophy of the service. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards, and industry codes of practice. A solid and broad understanding of children’s development and age -appropriate milestones across each domain can benefit early years educators in several positive ways. However, all areas of a child’s development are interlinked and co -relate. Viewing child ren’s growth and learning ‘holistically’ is an important quality for educators and professionals. These adults intentionally play a role in guiding children’s experiences and need to be intentional about what they understand about early childhood development and learning and what experiences and opportunities they provide by considering the ‘whole child’ and all developmental domains. Activity: Think about Reflect honestly on how much you know about each domain of development for each age group from birth to 6 years old. Do you feel your knowledge is sufficient or lacking? Activity: Read Read this article to gain an understanding about the benefits for educators in understanding child learning and development. Article: Why learn about child development? What are the benefits of knowing about child development and learning?

The different areas of child development are interrelated and have an influence on each other. Each have a strong link making up the knowledge, skills and experiences appropriate for areas of development. The following activity provides a great explanation on the interrelationships between the areas of development. Activity: Read Review the development milestones relating to children between birth and six years of age. Document: Developmental Milestones Read the following article on child development. Article: The first five years Review the article on growth and development. Article: Growth and development Activity: Research Using the following chart, create a table that compares the development of a child of 12 months and a child of 5-6 years in two areas of each category.
