Willoughby 2 In every professional domain, there exists a standard set of questions that interviews are obligated to ask. The specific questions asked may vary depending upon factors such as industry norms, company culture, and job roles. For newly graduated nurses, the interview questions can fluctuate based on the specific unit within the healthcare facility to which they are applying. A few questions I might ask if I were an interviewer may include questions encompassing the candidate’s personal background, alignment of their values with those of the hospital, strategies for managing stress under pressure, reasoning for their interest in pursuing a particular nursing unit, and their conception of the attributes characterizing a “good nurse”. Gaining insight on a candidate’s character, values, and beliefs hold significance as it may serve as a determinant factor in assessing their suitability for both the role and unit team. Hospitals of all kinds have their own set beliefs and values. If an employee and the company’s beliefs and values do not align, this may cause a negative impact such as elevated turnover rates, heightened interpersonal conflict, and diminished employee loyalty and commitment. Lastly, understanding the reason behind why they choose a certain unit and how they view a good nurse could influence the interviewer’s decision to pick a candidate. While having straight A’s and excelling academically is quite impressive in nursing school, it takes more than knowledge to be a “good nurse.” How well is their bedside manner? Is their approach merely task-oriented or do they have a commitment to exceed exceptions in ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care? Did they choose this career path because they truly want to make a positive difference for their patient’s life or did, they just have high hopes to make loads of money?
