SPC RSPT-1411 Respiratory Care Procedures II / Mechanical Ventilation
This fully online course is designed to familiarize you with Respiratory Care Procedures and in-
troduction into Mechanical Ventilation. Topics included are:
•
Describe the rationale and the methods for performing a tracheotomy.
•
Identify the types of damage that artificial airways can cause.
•
Describe how to maintain and troubleshoot artificial airways properly.
•
Describe techniques for measuring and adjusting tracheal tube cuff pressures.
•
Identify when and how too extubate or decannulate a patient. SPC RSPT-1411 Respiratory Care Procedures II / Mechanical Ventilation
Program prepares students to perform respiratory procedures that affect both vented as well as unvented patients. Too successfully master the study objectives, students should be able to discuss and describe procedures to optimize patient ventilation and gas exchange. The completion requirements include:
1.
Define each of the following terms:
1.
Tracheoesophageal fistula
2.
Tracheoinnominate artery fistula
3.
Tracheomalacia
2.
Provide three factors to consider in switching from endotracheal tube to tracheostomy
3.
You are asked to explain to a family member what a total laryngectomy is, how would you explain this. 4.
Identify the medication used to reduce glottic or airway edema by mucosal vasoconstriction.
5.
Provide three things you would assess given a patient that is orally intubated.
6. Cuff pressures should be between __________________ cmH2O which is lower than the cap-
illary perfusion pressures limiting tracheal trauma.
7. Explain the following tracheal cuff inflation techniques:
1. Minimal Leak Technique (MLT)-
2. Minimal Occlusion Volume (MOV) –
3. Cuff pressure monitoring
8. Describe what VAP is.
9. Explain what must be done when placing a speaking valve over a tracheostomy tube
10.
What must always be made readily available in or near a patients room that has a tra-
cheostomy tube. 11.
Total application time for endotracheal suction in adults should not exceed how much time. 12.
After repeated nasotracheal suctioning over two days, a patient with retained secretions develops minor bleeding through the nose. Which of the following actions would you recom-
mend? 13.
For adult patients, the suction catheter being used should have an outer diameter no more than _____ % of the inner diameter of the airway being suctioned.
14. Name four things that may cause an obstruction to the Endotracheal tube.
15. What is a cricothyroidotomy.
16. If a tracheal airway appears to be completely obstructed, the RT needs to perform steps in order to relieve the obstruction. What are they? 17. You have a tracheostomy patient with a size 6 trach. What should I hope to see in the pa-
tients room relating to this type of patient or what supplies should be in the patients room.
