Journal Article Note Taking Worksheet Mostly comments should be in your own words. Copy and paste is discouraged. If quotes are used be sure to add quotation marks. This template is designed to help you comprehend and evaluate the article. Add sufficient detail to allow you to participate fully in the discussion during class. (Bold categories require your judgment and are not necessarily free of opinion [i.e. they require your assessment). Citation: First Author, Date of publication, Title, Journal Heddie Mejborn, 2021, Dietary intake of Red Meat, Processed Meat, and Poultry and Risk of colorectal cancer and all-cause mortality in the context of dietary guideline compliance, Nutrients Executive summary (in 6 sentences or fewer, summarize this article as if you were explaining it to your parents): This article is about the increased risk of colorectal cancer and mortality. In this study they looked at the diet composition of red processed meat and poultry intake. They looked at how eating these meats in your diet can increase your risk of colorectal cancer. They collected their data from using three different survey rounds using the Danish National survey based on Diet and physical activity. They did the study with people from the ages 15-75 and found that no significant association between red and processed meat intake and colorectal cancer risk. They did find that poultry increased colorectal cancer risk for high versus low intake. Objective/question (what is/are the author’s objective[s], why was the experiment conducted): To evaluate the associations between the intake of red and processed meat and poultry and CRC and all cause mortality risk, both in an adult study population in general and in subgroups with different dietary guideline compliance, minimizing the influence of diet related confounding Hypothesis (what is the author’s hypothesis, if not explicitly stated by the authors infer one from the context and design of the study): Will the intake of red processed meat and poultry influence the risks of CRC Methodology (bullet list of what was done, include treatments, # of animals, etc): The relationship between the consumption of red meat, processed meat, and poultry and the risk of colorectal cancer and all-cause mortality was assessed using statistical methods such as cox proportional hazards models or other appropriate regression models adjustments were made for potential confoundsers, participants adherence to dietary guidelines was evaluated and incorporated into the analysis allowing for the assessment of whether the observed associations where influenced by compliance with dietary recommendations.
Results (bullet list of findings, main outcomes): They ascertained 127 incident CRC cases and 640 persons died during the follow up the daily median of red meat intake was approximately twice as high as the processed meat intake and four times as high as the poultry intake. The 25% of participants with the lowest poultry intake were eating 1g of poultry per day or less because several participants were not eating poultry during the dietary survey There was no significant associations found between red meat and processed meat intake and CRC risk, high poultry intake increased the CRC risk significantly compared with low poultry intake but the increase was not observed when examining risk change per 100 g per day, the total meat intake did not significantly affect CRC risk in the study Discussion (were the objectives met, is there speculation, are results statistically and biologically significant, was discussion clear and relevant, ) I would say no they did not meet their objective because they found there is no significant association with red meat, processed meat, and poultry Conclusion (summarize key points, do results support conclusions):l In conclusion their study did not achieve their objective goal and found that there is no significant association between red, processed, and poultry meat when it comes to the colorectal cancer risk and the risk of mortality Important Figures and/or Tables (brief description of why this table/figure is important to the paper): Table one is showing the demographics of the colorectal cancer study populations this tells us the different types of people they used in the study Table two shows us the amount of meat that they would consume in the study that tells us as the reader how much they were giving the subjects each time Critical analysis and reflection (what do these data mean in the real world, what implications can you think of, are further experiments necessary): This means in the real world is that whatever intake of different kinds of meat it wont effect your risk of colorectal cancer or your mortality. I feel like they can broaden this study a little more using more people and maybe focusing on just red and poultry or try using different types of meat cuts etc. Questions (list your questions here, include concepts, ideas, details, etc you didn’t understand that could be discussed in class): What does their job or education have to do with their meat intake daily?
