Unit 4 Video Discussion Diverse Family Contexts We learned about many different types of families in this unit and how they could be promoted and fostered. In this discussion, I will be discussing two non-nuclear families and the factors that can lead to these types of families. Nuclear families usually consist of adult male and female parents and their biological children. The non-nuclear families that I chose are foster care families and single-parent households. The factors that can lead to foster-care families include abuse, neglect, abandonment, or even cases where there are no known or living relatives. The factors that can lead to single-parent households range from many different reasons such as incarceration, death, separation, abuse, substance abuse, and many more. Two ways that a human services professional can promote resilience in each of these types of non-nuclear families is by ensuring they are referred to the appropriate resources that are available and warranted to them as well as just being there for support. I believe the best way to help someone people is to just let them know that they aren’t alone throughout the process as they navigate through their challenges. Two interventions that could be implemented to assist either a nuclear or a non-nuclear family are case management and mental health support. Case management involves assessing the needs, becoming a point of contact, as well as coordinating services for the families to ensure that their needs are addressed as well as advocating for the family. I feel this would be one of the best courses of action when working with either type of family. I mentioned mental health support because when it comes to a lot of nuclear and non-nuclear families, the challenges that they face could lead to a lot of unaddressed issues such as depression, anger, and anxiety. These
two interventions could help the families along the way as they process and move forward through their challenges along with any other resources that would be available to them to help them recover.
