Active Supervision Keeping the residents safe at Alabama Clinical Schools is our top priority. Active Supervision is the most effective strategy for creating a safe environment and preventing injuries for the children in our care. Active Supervision always requires focused attention and intentional observation of children. Staff position themselves to observe all the children: watching, counting, and always engaging. During transitions, staff accounts for all children with face recognition, visually identifying each child as they count. They also use their knowledge of each child’s development and abilities to anticipate what they will do, get involved, and redirect them when necessary. Strategies for Active Supervision Set up the Environment o Set up the environment so that you can staff can always supervise children. This means surrounding areas where the residents are gathered (dayroom, classroom, basketball court, cafeteria, etc.). Position Staff o Position yourself in the environment to prevent children from harm. Stay close to children who may need additional support. The location of staff helps provide support to these children and allows staff to be proactive. Listen o Staff who are listening closely to children can immediately identify signs of potential danger. Listen for words that are triggers for all children. Listen for silence (especially in the bedroom/bathroom). Silence can signify reason for concern Anticipate Children’s Behavior o Staff must use what they know about each child’s interests and skills to predict what he will do. Staff should also recognize when children get upset or take a dangerous risk (think about critical times: shower time, bedtime, when they are bored). Staff who know what to expect are better able to protect children from harm.
Engage and Redirect o Staff should use what they know about each child’s individual needs and development to offer support. Staff should not wait until children are unable to problem-solve on their own before getting involved When these strategies are properly used together, we can create a safe environment for the children in our care. I have read, agree to follow, and utilize the strategies presented to me today. ____________________________ _________________ Name Date
