Parents have numerous decisions to make when raising a child. As an early childhood educator, you may encounter families who have views that are different from your own. Select a topic of choice for parents and discuss the positives and negatives of that choice. Using cloth diapers can be cost-effective in the long run when comparing to disposable diapers. Cloth diapers costs can reach costs as high as $600 per child over the span of two years; while, disposable diapers cost as high at $3,00 per child over the span of two years (Cloth Diapers Vs Disposable: Pros and Cons, n.d.). Cloth diapers are also more environmentally friendly, as they are made from natural materials and can be reused, causing less of a harmful impact on the environment (6 Advantages and Disadvantages of Cloth Diapers, 2017). Disposable diapers tend to be thought of as the easiest option based highly on its convenience; however, are made with more chemical than fabric (Cloth Diapers Vs Disposable: Pros and Cons, n.d.). Disposable diapers generally take about two hundred years to fully decompose. Cloth diapers are made with removable linings for easier changing and washing, Velcro snaps and closures, and organic fabrics to reduce the chances of rashes and other health problems due to containing less chemicals and substances (6 Advantages and Disadvantages of Cloth Diapers, 2017). Research has suggested, cloth-diapered babies tend to potty-train faster than babies who wear disposable diapers. When using cloth diapers, they tend to be less absorbent as disposable diapers, causing caregivers to change diapers more often. When traveling, constant changing and holding onto soiled diapers can become a hassle (6 Advantages and Disadvantages of Cloth Diapers, 2017). Cloth diapers also require specific washing and drying techniques to ensure sanitary satisfaction, meaning an increase in the water and electric bills. Additionally, cloth diapers can be less friendly when considering registering for daycare (Cloth Diapers Vs Disposable: Pros and Cons, n.d.). When deciding which option is best, the answer really is: whatever works best for the family. There is no right or wrong answer to diapering. Some families have found ways to use both; for example, using cloth diapers when at home and on a regular routine, and utilizing disposables when outside of the house and traveling (Cloth Diapers Vs Disposable: Pros and Cons, n.d.). 6 Advantages and Disadvantages of cloth diapers.
