Week 6 Discussion COLLAPSE Why do you think so many hospital administrators have difficulty understanding statistical methods used in healthcare research? Respond to at least two of your classmates' or instructor's posts. Provide examples of concepts (such as a confidence interval) and practical skills you have learned that could be used to explain the information to healthcare leaders who might not have an MHA or training in healthcare research. I believe that anytime you are hands-on, there is a better understanding of any concept. Researchers and statisticians are more involved in statistical methods, therefore have a better understanding. How the information is presented obviously also plays a role in comprehension. Terms in statistics can be confusing. Personally, this is where my own confusion comes in. For those who are not familiar with the terminology and words used to describe the process of what to do with this data, it can sound like a foreign language. I have taken statistics once before un undergrad, and am currently taking biostatistics. There has been at least ten years in between these two classes and that sums up the extend of my training and education in statistics. Jacobsen, K. H. (2017). Introduction to health research methods (2nd ed.). Burlington, MA: Jones & Bartlett Learning. REPLIES: Jacob, I also agree that confidence intervals and p values would be very valuable in administration. It is important to know what percentage of confidence is predicted when making large administrative decisions. It would not be wise to proceed without this information, especially the confidence interval. As you said, it predicts that 95 of the 100 would be truly correct. It is used to measure the degree of uncertainty. Commonly used in predicting behavior. This could be in patient satisfaction or behavior. These strategies can be used in marketing or in research. In clinical research, evidence based studies are sued in order for future treatments as well. This can help shape administrative policies on treatment and care. Great post! Lindsey Sullivan, L. M. Dr. O, This is a good point. You are very correct that experience speaks loudly! I have seen it a lot in private practice and even larger corporations such as hospitals. Once you know the ‘ropes’ you are harder to replace to a specific company. However, continuing education is pertinent to keeping up with the times. There is always something more to learn, no matter what industry. I found an interesting website (advertisement for Healthcare Administration Degree) but it did explain about C.E. credits. It states they are not required, just like being licensed is also not required. I was aware you did not need licensing, but I do not think being required to complete a certain amount of C.E.s per year or per ‘x’ number of years would be a bad idea. This is even required to retain a PMP certification. Something to think about for sure.
