This article is interesting because I am going to college to be a physical therapist and when I become a doctor I want to make sure that I am making a difference. I want to make sure that I am giving everyone the opportunity to feel comfortable in a doctor's office and to be able to have the same care opportunities as everyone else. 2) In what way is this article related to diversity? (please be specific) This article is relevant to diversity because this article sheds light on the fact that we are lacking diversity in the U.S. healthcare system; we don't have nearly enough African American, Hispanic and other minorities representation. 3) What is your reaction to it? I was quite surprised and disgusted to find out that Black women have the highest maternal mortality rate of any demographic in the U.S. and are three times more likely to die from pregnancy complications compared to white women. 4) What did you learn from it or what insights did you gain? The U.S healthcare system needs more doctors of African American, Hispanic and indigenous heritage. Lack of diversity in medicine has an influence on patient treatment and public health, with one in every five Black Americans reporting discrimination and 70% saying the system discriminates against people based on race and ethnicity. The U.S healthcare system must encourage minority students to pursue medical vocations prior to college and assure equitable admittance for individuals from underserved backgrounds. Engaging students early on in their educational career may help them gain experience and construct good application packages. A comprehensive screening of applications can aid in the admission of competent, compassionate students who support the medical goal. Financial restrictions, under- resourced families, and racism can all lead to dropout rates among disadvantaged students in medical school. Medical students frequently value service to others, and the healthcare system needs greater empathy and diversity. Overall this article gave me insights on the health care system and the much needed changes it needs.
