1.
The National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) keeps data on U.S. suicides. Data can be obtained from the WISQARS Fatal Injury Reports. The next table and figure come from those data. Use these information to answer the following questions: a.
What type of variables are included in this table and then the figure? The variables included in this table are number of suicides by age group and sex. The figure shows the same variables in a chart which allows readers to determine
the patterns of the data. b.
Discuss some patterns you notice in these data? Some patterns I noticed in this data is that the number of suicides for the age group of 10-14 remains very low overtime. The number of suicides for ages 75+ fluctuates from 1981-1996 and then remains steadily high. For ages 15-24 and 65-74 both have a very similar number of suicides overtime. c.
What might be potential explanations that can you make as to why these patterns could have occurred? The potential explanations that I can make as to why these patterns could have occurred is because I would imagine that suicide was not as common among young children or teens until the 2000s. This would account for the steady number of suicides overtime. However based on the graph it looks like all age groups were rising since 2000. This could be due to lack of mental health awareness or even higher drug use such as opioids. Homework #4

2.
The following table shows the distribution of suicides and homicides in the United States in 1999
by day of the week. a.
What type of descriptive variable is being used in this data?
The descriptive variable being used in this data is the days of the week. b.
What patterns do you notice within these data? The patterns I noticed within this data is that Friday had the lowest suicide and homicide rates for both. The highest rates were on Monday for suicide and Sunday for homicide. c.
What questions can you make as to why this pattern could have occurred? The questions I can make are what age group had the highest rates of suicide? Were the homicides gang related? What state had the overall highest deaths due to suicide and homicide? What was the crime like in this state?
d.
Is there some other information you would like to see that might also help understand this?
Some other information I would like to see that might help us better understand this is the average deaths per day from suicide and homicide per each state. Another piece of information would be the age groups and what the weather was like during the time periods.
