Module 06 Assignment - The Value of Food Labels
Scenario:
You are at the grocery store and want to buy some crackers, but you want to choose the healthiest
option. You are considering two different brands and decide to compare
the nutrition labels on the boxes.
The image below shows what you see for Cracker A and for Cracker B
.
Instructions:
Apply what you have learned in the course, and answer the following questions using complete
sentences that reflect proper spelling/grammar.
1.
What major differences do you see between the nutrients in these brands?
There is a big difference in the level of sodium. Cracker A has 275mg, while Cracker B has
90mg. The level of saturated fats also differs significantly between the crackers. Cracker A has
2.5g, which forms 13% of its daily value, while Cracker B has 0.3 g, which forms 2% of its daily
value.
2.
What are the serving sizes for each brand? Why is it important to note serving sizes when
comparing?
The serving size of A is 9 crackers (23g), while that of B is 4 crackers (20g). Serving size is a
critical element of nutrition. The number of servings an individual consumes resonates with the
amount of calories the body takes. Consuming a lot of calories is detrimental to health since it
brings obesity and other lifestyle diseases. Concurrently, serving size determines how much you

should consume of a particular food product, therefore aiding in the management of sugar, fat,
and calorie levels in the body.
3.
Are either of these crackers low in sodium according to current recommendations?
What are the
current sodium recommendations for a food to be considered “low sodium?”
B is low in sodium. According to FDA stipulations, a food product is termed as low on sodium
when it contains 140mg of sodium or less per serving (FDA,2023). Cracker B has 90mg per
serving, which makes it way below the FDA low sodium level mark.
4.
Which cracker (“A” or “B” brand) should someone choose if they are trying to eat less fats (both
saturated and trans fat), less sodium, and more fiber?
Cracker A has 2.5g of saturated fats, 275mg of sodium, and 1g of fiber, which is more than the
composition of B on sodium and saturated fats. B has 0.3g of saturated fats, 90mg of sodium,
and 3g of fiber. For an individual who wants to consume less fats, less sodium, and more fiber,
option B is the best.
5.
In your opinion, which is the “healthier” cracker snack? Explain your reasoning.
Cracker B is the healthier. Cracker B is low on facts and higher in fiber, which is a vital
component of nutrition. Concurrently, B is low in sodium. While sodium is a vital element for
the body, its consumption should be limited to low amounts since high consumption can lead to
cardiovascular diseases (FDA,2023). In that vista, Cracker B outstands as the healthier.
