Lab 4 | Physical Activity Interventions - Michie’s Intervention Design In this lab assignment you will be designing a physical activity or exercise intervention using Michie’s Intervention Design process. We will only focus on Stages 1, 2 and 3 for the purposes of this assignment. Overall, your goal is to design an intervention that improves physical activity or exercise behavior for a specific target population. Your intervention should include evidence-based strategies to address the unique needs, barriers, and preferences of the chosen population. Please complete the following prompts and corresponding tables. Read all prompts and instructions carefully. Your textbook (Chapters 5 and 6) and the corresponding video lectures on Canvas will be valuable resources as you complete this assignment. Lab Guidelines : 1. Select a specific target population . a. Recall that there are differences in physical activity and health behavior in different populations (e.g., men vs. women, children vs. adults). It’s important to tailor physical activity populations for the unique needs and barriers of specific populations. i. Your target population could include (but is not limited to): older adults, children with disabilities, LGBTQ+ college students, pregnant women, sedentary office workers, adults with chronic health conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, etc.), etc. 2. Select a specific target behavior . a. Target behaviors must be related to physical activity or exercise. b. They should be specific (e.g., my target behavior is 2-3 strength training sessions per week). Consider the following: i. Type and mode of physical activity/exercise ii. Frequency and duration of sessions (e.g., 3, 45-min training sessions) iii. Location (e.g., walk or bike to work 3 times per week) 3. Conduct a (hypothetical) behavioral analysis for your chosen population to identify their capability, opportunity, and motivation to perform the behavior. a. You can describe capability, opportunity, and motivation based on what you already know about a target population, or you can do some research about what factors influence behavior. b. For example, based on what we have learned in this class , women tend to engage in strength training less than men. Here’s what a behavioral analysis would reveal: i. Capability : women must have the knowledge about how to perform strength training exercises, they must know how to use equipment or weights, and they must learn the skills to be able to successfully perform the activities. ii. Opportunity : women should feel supported in physical environments (e.g., H&K weight rooms) and have good social support that helps encourage them to engage in strength training. iii. Motivation : before women engage in strength training, they should see/understand how strength training can improve their health and wellbeing, and they should want to participate in this behavior. 4. Create a detailed plan targeting the COM-B components (see worksheet below).
Stage 1: Understand the Behavior 1. Step 1 : a. Describe your target population in 2-3 sentences. b. Describe your specific target behavior (e.g., vigorous intensity physical activity, strength training, walking, reduced sedentary time, etc.) in 2-3 sentences. c. Describe why you selected this target population and target behavior. 2. Step 2 : Conduct a Behavioral Analysis and Diagnosis. Use the table below to describe the target population’s capability, opportunity, and motivation to engage in the behavior. Capability Opportunity Motivation a. List at least 3 barriers that may prevent your target population from being successful at improving the physical activity or exercise behavior. b. List at least 3 facilitators that may help your target population from being successful at improving the physical activity or exercise behavior. 3. Next, complete the following table to help diagnose what factors should be a focus in your intervention. ( Note : there is a great example of this table on p. 124 in your textbook) COM-B Determinants What needs to happen for physical activity to occur? Is there a need for change? Physical capability Psychological capability Physical opportunity Social opportunity
