Assignment 1: Literature Review Framework
Cameron Smith (46513750)
KIN 205 001: Research Methods in Kinesiology
Dr. Carolyn McEwen
November 2023
Section 1:
1.
Identify Purpose Statement:
Purpose statement:
The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand the effect of opioid
prescription on metal health, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and quality of life in patients
recovering from traumatic brachial plexus injures (TBPI) using a grounded theory approach.
Potentially inductive reasoning.
2.
Identify and justify (using peer reviewed literature) your research hypotheses (quantitative)
and/or research questions (qualitative)
Research Questions:
o
What are common sentiments among those prescribed opioids for pain after TBPI?
o
In what ways does opioid prescription affect the patient's emotional wellbeing and
mental health?
o
What role do opioids play in exaggerating or reducing the effects of PTSD in those
recovering from TBPI?
o
How can opioids effect daily living, relationships, and overall quality of life?
These research questions are important to answer because TBPI’s are an incredibly challenging injury
to deal with, and the nature of opioids and their relatively common prescription may be overall negative
to the recovery and rehabilitation of the patient. Earlier research touches on some of these questions
and their importance (Cite), but further answering these questions may lead to a better understanding
of this injury.
3.
Define and justify (using peer reviewed literature) the population you will be studying
(theoretical-Inclusion and exclusion criteria- and study populations-who I would have access to),
identify what participant sample you will examine and how you will obtain participants
(sampling frame)
4.
Theoretical Population, study population, sampling frame:
The theoretical population for this study includes people who have; gone through a
traumatic brachial plexus injury, are over the age of 18, are fluent in English, and have had some
level of experience with opioids in their recovery process.
The study population will have the same inclusion criteria but will be limited to
participants who get contacted via the sampling frame.
The sampling frame for this study will follow purposive sampling, where people in online
support groups, in-person recovery groups, and postings in recovery clinics will be used.
Furthermore, snowball sampling from patient to patient will be used to collect an inclusive
sample. Geographic location will not be a limitation in this study, as online resources may be
used to interview participants.
