Lesson 4 Assignment By Angela Christensen Wellness of the Young Child What questions could be asked of Jaimini's mom to learn more about the food that Jaimini is accustomed to eating? Some questions that could be asked to help Jaimini are: What types of foods does Jaimini enjoy eating? Does her family have certain times throughout the day for meal and snack times? Do they sit together as a family for meals and snacks? Does Jaimini have food allergies or dietary restrictions that would stop her from eating what is being served? What are some food preferences Jaimini has? What are some spices or seasonings that are commonly used in their culture? Does Jaimini have problems with certain textures of foods? What type of questions can be asked to Jaimini's mom to learn more about common practices surrounding mealtimes in Jaimini's culture, such as eating with the right hand instead of using silverware? Some questions that could be asked are: What are some customs and traditions surrounding food and eating that are practiced in their community? What are the customs and traditions surrounding using their right hand to eat instead of using utensils? Is there a specific way food needs to be prepared, served, or stored in their culture? What are some rules or taboos regarding sharing foods or eating in a certain setting like outside or inside? Is there a certain mealtime etiquette that is expected
when getting ready for a meal? Are there any special cooking techniques or ingredients that Jaimini is used to seeing and tasting? What kind of cultural accommodations are reasonable for Happy Hearts Daycare to make to suit the health, safety, and nutrition of the children? The daycare could incorporate more finger foods that are easy to pick up without utensils which would also help illuminate other children telling Jaimini that she should not be eating in a way that is the only way she knows. The school could expand its menu to include some vegetarian selections that could be more appealing to Jaimini. They could even purchase a variety of spices and seasonings to try that could appeal to Jaimini better. “Head Start Performance Standards state that all programs must serve food that are culturally and developmentally appropriate. Children’s nutritional needs must be met to include special diets and children with disabilities” (Sorte et al., 2020h, Pg 138). How can the menu be adapted to meet the needs to support special dietary needs or food preferences of Jaimini? Happy Hearts Daycare could provide snacks or smaller meals more frequently throughout the day that meet a variety of different backgrounds and cultures. This would help the children to explore new food options that they are not used to and maybe find something new they like while helping others to not feel like an outcast because of their food preferences. The school could expand its thinking and selection
of cultural dishes or ingredients that are common in Jaimini’s culture that they could serve. How would you incorporate Jaimini's cultural practices during mealtimes? I would help to incorporate Jaimini’s culture during mealtimes by letting all the children know we are trying something new and different such as eating with our hands today instead of utensils. I would do an activity with children about the different places of the world that people are from and the different customs they have and believe in. I would teach my students that everyone is different and comes from different cultures with different ways of doing things and it would be nice for us to learn from others and try something new. I would try to find different snacks that I could bring into the classroom that are from Jaimini’s culture. I could tell the children we are doing a show and tell day and have them each bring in a different item, toy, picture, song, or book to share with everyone that reflects their culture. We could even ask the parents to come join in and talk with the class about the different traditions they have. “Childcare educators need to understand menu planning, be able to identify guidelines and how to apply them, and develop a system to organize and access resources” (Sorte et al., 2020h, Pg. 134).
