IHI Module Reflection
Module TA 101: Introduction to the Triple Aim for Populations
IHI Triple AIM can improve health care outcomes by providing better quality of care and reducing costs
while improving the health of the population. Not only should the population get access to better care
and preventative measures, but also need healthcare costs to be lower and allocate the extra money to
other things that will improve their health.
Module QI 101: Introduction to Health Care Improvement
Healthcare organizations use six dimensions and aims of healthcare quality, such as patient-
centeredness, safety, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, and timeliness. These six goals are so
comprehensive that they remain the dominant framework for thinking about improving the quality of
health care in the United States so that organizations know where to focus their improvement efforts.
Module QI 102: How to Improve with the Model for Improvement
The Model for Improvement include processes for learning from tests of change, such as the Plan-Do-
Study-Act (PDSA) cycle. The PDSA cycle allows teams to quickly test changes on a small scale, modify
whatever they need, and then test again. The first step in initiating a Model for Improvement is asking
three questions about the improvement you are wanting to address such as, what are we trying to
accomplish, are the objectives measurable, and what changes can we make to bring improvements?
Module QI 103: Testing and Measuring Changes with PDSA Cycles
When measuring for improvement, it is necessary to select and track more than one measure that
consist of outcome measures, process measures, and balancing measures because when determining
the impact of change, one measure may not be enough. The PDSA cycles include:
Plan- Statement of what you plan to do in this testing and what you hope the outcome may be.
Do- Execute the plan or initiate the plan; what did you observe?
Study – After implementation you will study the results.
Act – Is the implementation effective? And if it did not, what can you do differently next time?
Module QI 104: Interpreting Data: Run Charts, Control Charts, and Other Measurements
The goal for this course is to be able to draw run charts and describe the chart and its changes, being
able to draw and explain control charts, apply the four rules to show non-random patterns on run charts,
and be able to decide and understand what and how to use other charts, such as a histogram, scatter
plots, and Pareto charts.
Module QI 105: Leading Quality Improvement
Leading a quality improvement project through the four key phases include setting an aim, set up an
improvement strategy, set up and pilot a dependable standard process of care, implement the standard
care process, monitor the performance, and spread the new standard throughout the system. In order to
set an aim, you should have a project idea and create an aim statement that answers the following
questions: How much, when and for whom? With the statement in place, the next step is to create a
team, develop a plan, test the changes using the PDSA cycle, make the changes, monitor performance,
and then spread the new standard throughout the system.
