HUMS 105 DISCUSSION 3
Standard 2 the right to informed consent is very important in human services professions.
Without consent, everything you do is illegal and could cause you and your place of
employment to get sued and bad ratings. Informed consent helps to establish trust between the
human services professional and the client. In order to practice informed consent, the provider
must inform the patient of their rights and explain to them what to expect with their care. The
National Organization for Human Services states, “
Clients should be informed that they may
withdraw consent at any time except where denied by court order and should be able to ask
questions before agreeing to the services.” Most providers require the client to sign a form to
prove that the client agreed and consented to their care before moving forward. An example of
an ethical dilemma could be when the client wasn’t made aware of the treatment plan and then
counseling starts and they are confused and wondering why they weren’t told they would be
getting counseling. The solution is for the provider to get informed consent by going over the
treatment plan again and letting the client ask questions so that they are aware.
Standard 6 which is prohibited sexual or romantic relationships with clients is also very
important in the ethics of human services. Having a sexual or romantic relationship with clients
can cause a big problem in your company and most likely will cost you your job and even
criminal charges. Having a relationship with a client can cloud your judgment and make you
become biased about some things. The client will not be getting the patient/provider
experience that is needed and required if there is an unacceptable relationship going on. The
National Organization for Human Services states, “
Before engaging in sexual or romantic
relationships with former clients, friends, or family members of former clients, human service
professionals carefully evaluate potential exploitation or harm and refrain from entering into
such a relationship.” If the relationship with a former client comes to light, it could cause your
reputation to decline and make people not trust you any longer. Your employer could also start
investigating you to see if the treatment for your other clients has been done correctly and
ethically. An example of an ethical dilemma would be partaking in a relationship with your
client’s brother. This is unacceptable because your partner could ask and pressure you into not
reporting the child abuse that your client told you is going on. A solution to this dilemma is to
break off the relationship with the client’s brother and tell your employer that you were having
a relationship with the brother and that the client needs a new provider. The child abuse should
also be reported to the proper authorities.
