Module Six Paper - Essay on Old Age
1.
First, discuss how your personal views of personality, cognition and
physical state of old age have been influenced by the
developmental theories of aging to which you have been exposed.
(Lally & Valentine-French: Chapter 9).
In the introduction of chapter nine: Late Adulthood we are
introduced to eight specific theories that contribute to the process of
aging. Each one is broken down to specific criteria of why aging may
occur in someone, some reasons may be genetic, predisposed,
biological, environmental and even psychical. The list of the theories are
genetics, evolutionary theory, cellular clock theory, DNA damage,
Immune and Hormonal stress theories and Hormonal Stress theory.
(Lally & Valentine-French, 2019). Breaking down personality, cognition
and psychical state on the theories of old age I would say the top three
would be genetics/evolutionary theory, DNA damage and hormonal
stress theory. But, essentially evaluating these theories they are primarily
based on biological and physiological aspects of aging. They do not get
into specifics of personality, that would just be a personal opinion based
on the evidence provided but on cognition and physical state, these
theories do provide logical explanations of aging in scientific
methodology. For personality, I say genetics and evolutionary theory play
a part in who you are and who you develop to be. Genetically, you are
predisposed to some characteristics based on how science works.
Evolutionary would be implementing environmental knowledge like
inherited traits, the ability to adapt, waiting on your personality to develop
is also a part of genetics, just the second theory of that category,
because as you grow you are exposed to different environments and if
those environments have chemical exposure, your reactions are
susceptible to change. Evolutionary psychology emphasizes the
importance of natural selection; that is, those genes that allow one to
survive and reproduce will be more likely to be transmitted to offspring.
(Lally & Valentine-French, 2019). Cognitively speaking DNA damage can
seriously impact your brain activity.
2.
Then, research each of the theories of aging of
Robert Peck,
Daniel Levinson and Bernice Neugarten. These theorists are not in
the Lally & French-Valentine textbook. You will need to search and
find information on these three theories. Be sure to cite and
reference your source(s) in APA format.
3.
Reflect on how your reading of each of the social theories (Erikson,
Peck, Levinson, and Neugarten) changed (or did not change) your
mind about older adulthood.
Include information from all 4
theories.
