HS 2211 - Human Anatomy and Physiology
Discussion Forum Unit 7
Respiratory System Article Review
Using the external resources of PubMed
(
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/
), identify a clinical disorder that
represents a fundamental disturbance of the structural or functional integrity of
the respiratory system and its components. Introduce the clinical disorder to
your readers, describe the impact on community health and demonstrate your
understanding of the material presented in Chapter 22 by correctly defining and
using at least 4 anatomic and/or physiologic terms related to the structural
and/or functional organization of the human respiratory system as related to the
clinical scenario you introduce to your readers.
Your discussion must be at least 250 words in length, detailing your thoughts and
position using 2 references from the readings for support. Also be sure to pose
1-2 well thought out questions from which your colleagues can formulate a
response or generate further discussion. Be sure to cite any references using
APA format.
Introduction
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease
characterized by chronic inflammation and airflow limitation (Global
Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease [GOLD], 2021). It
primarily affects the airways and lung tissue, leading to difficulties in
breathing. The two main subtypes of COPD are chronic bronchitis and
emphysema, which can coexist in patients.
Impact of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) on Community
Health
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a prevalent respiratory
disorder that significantly impacts community health, leading to various
social, economic, and healthcare challenges. The burden of COPD extends
beyond individual patients and affects families, healthcare systems, and
society.
1.
Public Health Burden
COPD is a significant public health concern worldwide, causing substantial
morbidity and mortality. According to the Global Initiative for Chronic
Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD, 2021), COPD is the third leading cause
of death globally, with an estimated 3 million deaths annually. The
disease's chronic nature necessitates long-term management, leading to
increased healthcare utilization, hospitalizations, and healthcare costs.
COPD patients often require frequent visits to healthcare facilities,
specialized treatments, and medications, straining healthcare resources and
services (GOLD, 2021).
2.
Reduced Workforce Productivity
COPD can have a significant impact on workforce productivity, contributing to
decreased work attendance and impaired job performance. As COPD
progresses, individuals may experience increased fatigue, breathlessness,
and exacerbations, leading to work absences and reduced work hours. The
loss of productive workdays due to COPD can have economic
repercussions for affected individuals and employers (GOLD, 2021).
3.
Quality of Life and Social Well-being
COPD substantially affects the quality of life and social well-being of patients.
The disease's symptoms, such as dyspnea (shortness of breath) and chronic
cough, can limit individuals' ability to engage in daily activities, leading to
social isolation and reduced participation in community life. COPD
patients may experience limitations in physical activity, hindering their
ability to participate in social events and recreational activities (GOLD,
2021).
