Afternoon All, Several variables can contribute to an elevated infection rate in a medical facility. For example, an extended hospital stay, a lengthy and complex procedure/surgery as well as inadequate hand washing practices by hospital staff, visitors, and patients. Antibiotic overuse can result in resistant bacteria, which means antibiotics become less effective and do not work as well. Medical equipment that enters the body can bring bacteria and infection. Urinary catheters, intravenous drips and infusions, breathing apparatus, and drain tubes are examples. Infection can occur in wounds, incisions (surgical cuts), burns, and skin ulcers. High-risk patient care places such as hospital intensive care units, are more prone to have infections ( Why People Are at Risk for Healthcare Associated Infections HAIs , n.d.). Healthcare professionals should wash their hands before and after every patient engagement. This is the simplest and most effective method of infection prevention. Gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection should be worn as needed. Patients with contagious disorders should be segregated to prevent infection transmission. Antibiotics should be administered with caution. Regular staff training and education sessions help keep them up to date on the most recent infection control measures. Surfaces and medical equipment must be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis ( Standard Precautions , n.d.). According to (Haque et al., 2020) problem-solving strategies include conducting frequent audits to check compliance with infection control policies, developing a feedback mechanism for workers to report issues or make improvements, and employing data analytics to discover patterns and areas for development. Regular team meetings can also be used to discuss problems and generate solutions. Haque, M., McKimm, J., Sartelli, M., Dhingra, S., Labricciosa, F. Great job on identifying the factors in which infection could spread within a medical facility. Over the years I have witness improper handwashing techniques. I would say Covid -19 has shown us all how important is it to properly clean and disinfect equipment, high risk areas, and surfaces that sees the most traffic. According to ( Prevent the Spread of Infectious Disease , n.d.) Hand washing is one of the most important and efficient techniques to prevent the spread of infections and illnesses. Wash your hands thoroughly with ordinary soap and water. Wash for at least 20 seconds and completely dry. If available, warm water is ideal. If soap and water are not available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer should be used. Cleaning and disinfecting healthcare environment is critical for decreasing indirect transmission of SARS-COV2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Prevent the spread of infectious disease . (n.d.). Reply 2 Good Afternoon Jack, Thanks for sharing. According to (APIC, 2023)he most common infections connected with healthcare institutions include catheter-related urinary tract infections, central line-associated bloodstream infections, surgical site infections, and pneumonia. Another dangerous condition that can result from antibiotic use is Clostridium difficile infection (also known as fatal diarrhea). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of every 31 hospitalized patients may get an illness as a result of their care. Every year, an estimated 75,000 patients will die. Hand hygiene by all staff and patients, keeping the healthcare environment and equipment clean, using standard sterile techniques when performing surgery, caring for wounds, or inserting and caring for medical devices such as intravenous cannulas and urinary catheters are all ways to reduce healthcare-associated infections.
