A national healthcare issue that I have selected is the increasing maternal mortality rate in the United States. "The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of industrialized countries and this rate is increasing"
(National Healthcare Quality and Disparities., 2022). Barriers of maternal health exists on many levels such as the community, healthcare access, family and education. "The CDC states severe maternal morbidity includes unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery that result in significant short- or long-term consequences to a woman’s health" (CDC., 2019). This healthcare issue has impacted my work setting by various policies set in place to reduce
unconscious bias in healthcare. Increasing education of the healthcare professions that work in the maternal health setting. Also, implementing Telehealth for patients to be able to have open communication with their providers. Social determinants that most affect this healthcare issue lack of insurance, housing, education, access to healthcare, and maternal healthcare workforce
shortage. Those that belong to a low income settings have been known to seek maternal care in late trimesters due to the social determents that they face. This can affect their health and the outcome of their pregnancy and postpartum care. The healthcare system has been known to provided referrals to community based organizations. Community based organizations have helped with maternal health for low income based patients. They provide access to wellness food, access to housing and other resources. Also, the healthcare system offers extensive prenatal care which provides birthing classes, breastfeeding education, and Telehealth access. Some of the education is offered in webinars which can be accessed within the patients own homes. In
addition, primary nursing is emphasized where patients have the same nurse
during their stay in labor and delivery. This is important to maternal care, because healthcare professionals will be able to identify any problems that may arise easily. Finally aftercare services are available to help with the transition from hospital to home. This gives mother additional support in any disparities that they may face. With social services and child development specialists are able to assess the interaction between the baby and their mother. They will be able to give instructions, suggestions and support for mom and baby after discharge. References: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
