Report
Ja’Liyah D. Durham EAD 513 - Clinical Field Experience B Grand Canyon University August 2, 2023 This artifact falls in alignment with ELCC Standard 2 which states, “ELCC Standard 2.0: A building-level education leader applies knowledge that promotes the success of every student by sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning through collaboration, trust, and a personalized learning environment with high expectations for students; creating and evaluating a comprehensive, rigorous and coherent curricular and instructional school program; developing and supervising the instructional and leadership capacity of school staff; and promoting the most effective and appropriate technologies to support teaching and learning within a school environment.” Though this is broad it solely states that our school’s culture should be reflected in the classroom amongst our students and teachers. At the beginning of the last school year, I taught 2nd Grade at a Public School located in Jacksonville, FL that was deemed a Leadership Academy. The school went from VPK-5th grade as 6th grade is considered middle school in that district. My classroom was filled with 42 students and a floating aide was not ideal of course. I came from teaching my first-year Kindergarten with 22 students max. This was a major culture shock for me, but I was excited about the changes that were to come. One day, I was being randomly observed teaching a Math lesson with the newest Math Curriculum. With that amount of students, I was able to get through the lesson with a lot of redirection but for the most part, the students were grasping the concept. Usually, after I teach a new lesson I check for understanding with my students with a form of hands-on participation. The aide and I would make our way around the classroom to review exit tickets and answer any questions. At the beginning of the year, this was where I felt I would drown. So many students trying to maneuver around one another can become a bit stressful. So I asked to observe a veteran teacher as they have the same number of students and part-time aides as I did in my classroom. I observed a Math lesson, I noticed as we observed that some students were finishing quicker than others but those who weren’t finished were struggling very hard. The teacher had a following task on the board that had steps to complete along with it. I noticed some students get straight to work as others disregarded the tasks on the board and had their sidebar conversations. The students were redirected by the aide and teacher but once they continued to assist more students they went back to the unacceptable behavior. So in my head, I am
comparing my class to hers and giving myself the pros and cons of where I am and how I could improve. I wanted to observe a different room as my ultimate goal is to provide my students with the best classroom environment possible. Being able to reflect on my experience, I am now able to strategize ways to aid my students in success. Incorporating technology usage in the classroom is a given, this is something that I feel could assist in many ways in the classroom. It is best recommended to continue to transition our students to engaged technology practices as this supports a positive learning culture for students Education Corner (2021). In my class currently, we have 1:1 iPads and a lot of our lessons can be done digitally with our students. It keeps them engaged and excited to have something besides pencil and paper on their face. Usually, once my students have shown mastery in the skill, I would then prompt them for math games while other students finish up their assignments. Another way that I could utilize technology is during our small group/guided-center block. Not limiting the students social interaction will build their confidence in independent assignments (Cox 2019). Students will be on a rotation wheel and they would receive small group instruction with me, independent work, and then an exit ticket on their iPad. This is something that I could have done in my 2nd-grade classroom. Teaching that large group of students is already a task in itself, I could have given those students accountability and independence. As I brought this review back to my principal mentor, she knew that a light bulb had turned on for me and that I was beginning to see things differently. It was a great feeling to see that I am being able to use what I am being taught in my instruction now. Now with us being almost four years post-pandemic, we are trying to return to normalcy as much as possible. It is time to get back in our student's faces and push the curriculum the best that we know how. These are all ways of implementing a positive classroom environment, engaging our students, and getting them eager to learn. I feel that both PSEL Standards align with the strategies provided in support of our school's vision/mission. The vision of Apollo Elementary is to inspire all children to learn at their highest potential, preparing them for tomorrow's global expectations. Without a doubt, we are adhering to the PSEL Standards by pushing every student toward academic achievement. Our theme for this year is for our students to set goals, crush goals, and to repeat them. They must be in a positive learning environment to do so.
