Increasing Your Cultural Competence
Introduction
Cultural competence is being able to interact respectfully and effectively with people who
withstand different cultural backgrounds and socio economic.
Competence of cultural
backgrounds would be to first understand and be aware of your own culture.
Then being
respectful to other cultural differences and having the knowledge of other cultures.
Cultural
competence is defined as “a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together
in a system, agency, or among professionals and enable that system, agency, or those
professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations”” (Dillard, V., Moss, J., Padgett, N.,
Tan, X., & Kennedy, A. B.,2021).
Identification of Completed Test
The two tests that I completed through the
“Implicit Association Tests” where Anxiety
and Marijuana Risk.
The Anxiety test had a few questions in the beginning that asked a few
different questions like age, and ethnicity.
This had me to categorize different words into
certain topics using two letter keys.
At the end of the test is when I found out it determined the
results by the speed and the first choices made.
The Marijuana Risk test also gave two
different categories harmful and good, which the word that popped I put into one of those
categories using a letter key.
The results were also determined by speed, but by which word I
put into the different topics.
Result Summary
The results for the anxiety results stated that I was anxious over calm.
By taking the
assessment is determined that I suffer with anxiety and in certain situations when under
Increasing Your Cultural Competence
pressure me getting anxious is what causes it.
The results from the marijuana assessment
stated that I felt moderate about marijuana and that it is dangerous.
Impression Overview
The anxiety assessment I agree with because when working on something that I know I
need to pass or working on something that has a great meaning I tend to get anxious which
causes anxiety.
Test taking would be considered a weakness and is something that leads to my
anxiety, another weakness would be working under pressure especially if it’s something that I
have seem to be falling behind on.
This would leave me with major areas to grow since I
understand where I lack, I have a chance to improve by leaving enough time to take my time at
these things.
A strength is being able to have control and change the things that leads to the
anxiety.
The marijuana assessment I disagree with.
I don’t have any negative feelings towards
it because I understand that this Is something that in some cases can be used as a medication.
In this case I am not sure of any strength or weakness and that in very open to understanding.
Growth Discussion
I
plan to address areas of growth and increase my cultural competence as a counselor-in-
training by remembering to expand my potential for growth.
Interacting with different cultural
groups in order to understand their background and not just considering that reading will tell
me everything that I need to know and understand.
Taking the time to experience or do an
internship at a practicum that I can work with people who withhold different cultural
backgrounds than myself and that are unfamiliar to me, I feel would be a great way to enhance
my competence levels.
I will always create goals that I would like to meet in a reasonable time
that will also focus on helping me to grow my cultural competence.

Goals
My number one goal is to make sure to provide a comfortable environment for
everyone including myself.
Ensuring that when dealing with cultural differences both parties
are respected, If I am unsure of anything I will not act like I am aware I will write down notes,
ask questions, and educate myself on what I was unsure of.
My second goal would be to
promote and make sure to attend groups that will have different people with different cultural
backgrounds as a way to educate myself and others on what we are not sure of.
Last, I will
make it my priority to attend different celebrations of different cultures.
Understanding Biases
As a counselor it is best to understand your own biases so that you are aware of and
will be able to acknowledge your own racist attitudes, your own beliefs, and feelings towards
certain cultures and racial issues.
In order for a counselor to be fully focus and offer their best
advice being aware of your own biases would be ways that your capable of doing so.
