Main Post: The healthcare organization that I chose for this discussion is the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC is one of the major operating components of the Department of Health and Human Services. The CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. The CDC increases the health security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency the CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish their goal, the CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). The CDC is a huge source for public health and setting clinical guidelines. The CDC has published hundreds of evidence- based guidelines on a range of topics such as, the prevention and control of infectious, prevention and control of noninfectious diseases, injuries to the promotion of environmental health and preparedness for natural and manmade disasters (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). Evidence- based practice is considered a lifelong problem-solving approach to the delivery of healthcare that integrates the best evidence from a body of research with a clinician's expertise and a patient's preferences and values to make the best decisions about patient care (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has work that is grounded in evidence based practice. The CDC sets guidelines for clinical practice as well as public health. They make recommendations for specific prevention, treatment, or policy action. The scientific evidence behind these statements is usually obtained through the systematic review of the literature and organized in evidence summaries. These evidence summaries present the causal associations that were critical to the decision-making process used to develop the recommendations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). I was aware that the CDC involved evidence-based practice but it was not until this assignment did I realize just how much their work revolved around EBP. The CDC works to improve the performance and accountability of the public health system, serving as both a monitoring tool and a call to action to improve health outcomes ( Young et al., 2018).

Throughout the years, I firmly believe that people should take their recommendations seriously as they protect our nation from infectious and noninfectious diseases through vaccinations, emergency preparedness, and established guidelines. The evidence-based guidelines that the CDC establishes undergo rigorous and randomized clinical trials supported by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) to verify the precision and quality of evidence supporting the guidelines (Carande-Kulis et al., 2022). For example, in response to the opioid epidemic, medical experts funded by the Agency for Healthcare and Research and Quality developed a standard measure of adherence through electronic medical record documentation to ensure that providers are following CDC guidelines in prescribing non-opioid pain medications and recommending non-pharmacologic pain relief measures as opposed to unnecessary opioid prescriptions and its effectiveness (Navis et al., 2020a). However, according to Navis et al. (2020b), the evaluation tool for providers utilized, called the Safer Opioid Prescribing Evaluation Tool (SOPET), concluded that opioid prescribing is a multifaceted issue and a complex process and providers need to individualize a patient’s pain management treatment to prevent illegal drug use. Furthermore, the CDC
