Two individuals whom you selected from the scenarios.
Amy is 53-year-old Caucasian women that struggles with Alcoholism. Amy is married
and the mother of 2 children ages 15 and 17. Amy and her husband rarely see each other due to
his constant schedule change at work and her children has stated they do not want to spend any
time with her. Amy has drinks with her coworkers several times a week and states that “it’s part
of the job”. Amy has a drink after work every day and often wake up in the middle of the night
after falling asleep from being intoxicated. Amy struggles with friendship and when talking to
her mom often tells her to pray about her issues. Since her childhood experiences Amy struggle
with believing in “God”. Due to Amy feeling like she has no one to vent to she turns to wine and
often has trouble going to work and dealing with issues of her daily life (Laureate Education,
2014).
Bill is a African American male age 25 who was recently arrested for driving under the
influence, possession of cocaine and attempting to flee law enforcement. Bill father left when he
was a child after Bill witness his dad abusing his mom. Bill began drinking and smoking in high
school. Bill enrolled in school to be a firefighter but was put out of school after finding cocaine
in his system and has a terrible work history due to being fired from jobs because his boss does
not like him. Bill has started to sell drugs to make some fast and easy money because he feels he
is obligated to help his mom and siblings. Bill deals with anger a lot and blames his mom for the
reason he must sell drugs and being addicted to cocaine (Laureate Education, 2014).
How you would apply a biopsychosocial-spiritual treatment approach to each individual.
According to Capuzzi and Stauffer, (2020) it has found to be beneficial to include
spirituality when counseling or helping one improve their mental and physical health. In Amy’s
situation when her mom tells her to “Pray’ and she gets upset due to her challenges in her
childhood that caused her to not believe in God is when the professionals could include the
biopsychosocial-spiritual treatment approach. Applying this approach will give one the
opportunity to assess Amy’s trauma past and present learning why Amy does not want to Pray or
angry at the concept of God causing her to turn to alcohol (Laureate Education, 2014). One can
recommend Amy to a faith-based treatment center to help Amy regain her faith in God hoping
that she will learn to turn to prayer about her issues versus alcohol. And once she faith is
restored, she may be more open to talking to her mom or her mom will be more open to talk to
her and she will feel supported and not alone through her issues (Blakely, 2016).
When utilizing the biopsychosocial spiritual approach with Bill's dependence treatment
is imperative with regards to diminishing the embarrassment and disgrace oftentimes connected
to African American guys battling addictions. By building a good relationship, creating empathy,
and social skill Bill’s inner spirits can be supplanted with good sensations of expectation and
start the recuperating cycle (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2020).
How addiction impacts the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing of each
individual differently
.
In Amy’s situation her addiction to alcohol has impacted her physically by making it
difficult for her to get up for work every morning. She finds hard to wake up every in the
morning and go to work after several drinks the night before. Emotionally Amy feels her
situation with her family (husband and children) is not going to get better. Socially she struggles
with making friends and feels she has no one to vent to about her issues so she drinks her
