Mosaic/Bird Feeder Lab Activity
You have been assigned to work with each individual client listed below. Both clients have an
interest in your chosen craft, and have expressed interest in working toward being able to
actively participate in a similar activity as a personal client goal. You decide to bring in a
pre-assembled craft kits to use with your clients. It is up to you as the therapist to figure out how
to use the pre-made kit to address your clients personal underlying areas of deficit and help
them get closer to achieving their personal goals.
Client 1:
You are the Occupational Therapy Assistant assigned to work with an adult (late adulthood) who
recently suffered a traumatic brain injury. They now present with functional limitations directly
related to mental functions- specifically mental functions of sequencing complex movement,
attention, and temperament and personality (OTPF page 52). Prior to their injury, the adult
enjoyed complex crafts, and was usually found in their garage on weekends working on some
sort of artistic project for leisure.
Client 2:
You are the Occupational Therapy Assistant assigned to work with a young adult who sustained
a spinal cord injury. They now present with functional limitations directly related to
neuromusculoskeletal and movement related functions- specifically joint stability, involuntary
movement reactions, control of voluntary movements, and impaired gait patterns (OTPF page
53). Prior to their injury, the adult worked at a local bakery as a cookie decorator, where they are
expected to return to work in a few weeks.
1.Think about the clients’ functional limitations and the skills needed to complete the
activity. List specific ways their limitations might impact their ability to participate in the
required task.
●
Client one:
The client’s functional limitations may impact their ability to
participate in the task as painting requires one to maintain attention to detail and
sequencing movements while applying the paint to the wood pieces. Sanding the
wood pieces down, and screwing the metal hook into the wood will also require
the client to maintain speed and time of motor production in case of feelings of
inner tension while completing the task. The client’s attention and distractibility
could cause the client to mess up while painting, or misalign the glued pieces
together.
●
Client two
- The client’s functional limitations may impact the motor skills to
participate in the task - specifically, sanding the wood piece, painting, gluing the
wooden pieces together, punching a hole in the wood. Client’s limitations with
involuntary movement reactions could cause her to mess up while painting if
losing grip on the wood piece. Client’s joint stability impairments could create
limitations when attempting to stabilize the wood while sanding, or holding the
metal hook while trying to screw it into the wood. Client’s gait pattern could affect
her limitations while moving from one area to another while collecting the
necessary supplies to complete the task.
2. What therapeutic activity did you come up with for your client? Be specific in describing
your set up and what you wish to accomplish with your client during the session. How does this
activity and your particular set-up help to address each client's areas of deficit?
Client 1:
●
The therapeutic activity that we came up with for the client was to create a bird feeder.
This craft can be done in the garage because the bird feeder requires sanding. The
location of where the craft is completed should be therapeutic to the client because this
is where the client liked to work on artistic projects prior to the brain injury. The location
should keep the client’s temperament more calm.
●
The set up of the items should be in order of how it is listed via instructions. This would
assist the client with the sequencing to create the bird feeder.
Client 2:
●
The therapeutic activity that we came up with for the client to focus on the joint stability
was sanding the wood. While performing the sanding task, the client should use a lot of
wrist, shoulder, elbow and finger joint movements. The sanding motion will help the
client to coordinate the joints with the sanding motion and can attain stability by
performing the task.
3.What aspects of the activity (performance skills) did you grade? List at least 3 with an
explanation. Remember that the performance skill you graded should be specific to what
the client is trying to better. We don’t necessarily need to grade up or down. We grade up when
there will be lots of unknowns, we grade down when we need to simplify or achieve specific
steps.
Client 1
●
One performance skill that would be graded would be process skills, sequences. The OT
can put all the pieces of the wood in order by what should be glued first. This way the
client can improve in their sequencing complex moving. This would help because the
client can practice their movements in their work area instead of having to walk around
the garage to obtain the objects.
●
Creating a more simplified instructional step by step. To help the client have a more clear
understanding of the step by step instructions to provide the client in building the bird
feeder.
●
Instructing the client to locate the necessary extra items needed to complete the bird
feeder on the table will encourage the client to collect the items in a necessary and
effective order. These items will be the glue, hammer/mallet, metal screw, paint brushes,
and paint tray.
Client 2
You are the Occupational Therapy Assistant assigned to work with a young adult who sustained
a spinal cord injury. They now present with functional limitations directly related to
neuromusculoskeletal and movement related functions- specifically joint stability, involuntary
movement reactions, control of voluntary movements, and impaired gait patterns (OTPF page
53). Prior to their injury, the adult worked at a local bakery as a cookie decorator, where they are
expected to return to work in a few weeks.
●
One performance skill that would be graded during this task would be endures. The OT
can put all of the necessary items out in close range for the client to collect and bring
back to the table. This will limit the amount of fatigue the client could experience while

moving around the room.
●
The OT could sand half of the necessary wood pieces to limit the amount of energy the
client will need to expel while completing the task.
●
The OT could pre-make a hole for the metal hook to be put into the wood pieces to
assist in the client's endurance due to needing to utilize a lot of wrist joint stability.
4. For each area of occupation (ADL, IADL, health management, rest and sleep,
education/work, play/leisure, social participation), describe one specific activity your client may
have difficulty with, based on their occupational profile. How could various components of your
therapeutic activity help to address each of the occupations you’ve listed.
Client 1:
- specifically mental functions of sequencing complex movement, attention, and
temperament and personality. Enjoys crafts
●
ADL
○
Personal Hygiene and Grooming
■
Client may have difficulty with the sequence of brushing their teeth and
flossing. This activity will work on sequences because when painting, you
will need to dip the brush in paint and then onto the bird house to color.
●
IADL
○
Home Establishment and Management
■
Client may have difficulty paying attention in maintaining their home.
Since the client likes to work on complex crafts for leisure, this activity
may help the client in their yard or gardening if they need to build garden
beds. This will help work on bringing back their interests.
●
Health Management
○
Social and Emotional Health Promotion and Maintenance
■
Clients would improve their mental health in treatment in performing an
enjoyable art and craft. The activity of building a bird feeder displays an
therapeutic aspect with the relaxation in the creative manner that the
client originally enjoys complex crafts.
●
Rest and Sleep
○
Sleep Preparation
■
Preparing for sleep requires engaging in a routine. This client has a
limitation on attention. The activity of building a birdhouse requires active
attention to follow a proper order of placing wood blocks together. This
activity will allow the client to undress in a sequential order and focus on
each part of removing clothes without getting distracted on another
activity.
●
Education/Work
○
Informal Educational Participation
■
Client may have difficulty with attention if they participate in a class or
program. This activity had a sheet of paper with instructions on how to
build the bird feeder. Reading the instructions outloud may help the
client’s attention so they can focus on what they are reading.
●
Play/Leisure
○
Play exploration
■
The client has difficulty in complex sequencing. Within the activity we
were putting the pieces together and gluing it up. This task can help the
client to obtain complex sequencing abilities as well as to participate in
games with sequencing and constructive rules in it. For example playing
with legos, chess, solving a puzzle etc.
●
Social Participation
○
Peer Group Participation
■
The client with the participation of building the bird feeder of similar
interests in the interaction while building the mental function in a positive
light. Socializing with others and obtaining positive feedback of their bird
feeder by others. would help with the clients improvement of their mental
function.
Client 2:
- specifically joint stability, involuntary movement reactions, control of voluntary
movements, and impaired gait patterns. Cookie decorator
●
ADL
○
This activity can help with the client’s ADL,
toileting and hygiene
. When the
client is sanding the bird feeder this can improve their control of voluntary
movements because when sanding the bird feeder they can use their visual
motor skills to guide their hand. This can be translated to toilet and hygiene when
the client has practiced the motion enough eventually the client would not need
their visual motor skills to guide their hand.
●
IADL
○
This activity can improve the client’s IADL
, meal preparation and clean
up. The
client used to work in a local bakery. Painting the bird feeder can improve the
client’s control of voluntary movement. Painting the bird feeder is like decorating
a cookie.
●
Health management
○
This activity can improve the client’s
health management, medication
management.
During the bird feeder activity the client is required to pour the
paint. This can help with medication management when the client’s medication is
in a liquid form. Pouring the paint would also improve their joint stability because
they are required to stabilize their wrist and fingers on the bottle to tilt the bottle
of paint above the plate.
●
Rest and sleep
○
This activity can improve the client’s
rest
. The bird feeder activity should be
therapeutic and relaxing to the client because decorating cookies is something
the client does for their career. The painting should be relaxing to the client which
can improve their sleep at night when they are finished with the task. Painting the
bird feeder is not stressful for the client.
●
Education/work
○
This activity can improve the client’s
job performance and maintenance
. The
client is expected to return back to work in a few weeks. This bird feeder activity
can improve the client’s functional limitations. During the bird feeder activity, the
client needs to walk to gather the supplies they need to complete the activity. The
client is required to stabilize certain joint movements throughout the activity.
●
Play/leisure
○
This activity will be important with
play participation
. While participating in the
enjoyable activity the client will be able to maintain a balance of play while also
utilizing the same skills to be used back at the bakery. The client could practice
finding enjoyment while paying attention to joint stabilization to ensure that they
can decorate properly.
●
Social participation
○
This activity can be done with friends as a
peer group participation
. This would
improve friendships because they are partaking in an activity that both people,
the client and their friend, are interested in. This overall activity can impact the
client’s well being in a positive manner because happiness can motivate the
client to be more active when it comes to rehabilitating.
