Service-Learning Reflection #1
The SDS Infographics Project was a great service-learning experience that broadened my view about some of the sustainable development goals that the world is struggling with. This project required high-quality research on SDS goals such as good health and well-being, quality education, and life on land. I read many scholarly articles on these goals, and I think what is working well is the government has many programs already in place to help with healthcare, education, and the sustainability of ecosystems. Some of these systems are things such as Obamacare which helped bring more affordable healthcare, government grants that are helping students afford higher quality education, and recycling programs to help keep human waste out of many ecosystems. With this in mind, some improvements can be made such as promoting these programs to people. This way more people can know about these programs that are there to help and not be overlooked. Based on these articles, I found many times these programs were not very effective due to the lack of informing others of these issues and what they can do to help. The knowledge that I gained from researching these topics is valuable because it has informed me of programs that I can use as well as help others use if I may be struggling with the same issues. It is also meaningful in the skills of my discipline because it has motivated me to want to help solve these issues in the future by doing small things such as recycling and keeping myself healthy. When completing this project there were a few ah-ha moments that struck me. One of these moments was that many careers involving experimental science research are very important in solving these issues the world is dealing with, but they are often overlooked because they don’t pay as much as other careers. As difficult as science and math is we need scientists
and mathematicians to help develop medicine and gather facts about what people are doing that is good and bad for this world. Another ah-ha moment I had was while reading a study about healthcare. The study showed that 75% of people go out of the country for major operations because healthcare is cheaper. This connects to the SDS project I just did because one of the many issues our country is struggling with is affordable healthcare. These two ah-ha moments go to show that the skills learned in science and math classes are crucial to helping develop innovations and determining the root of many of these global issues. An obstacle that I believe will arise as part of the knowledge I have collected from these articles, is the leaders of our country could potentially be a major downfall in these worldwide issues. Our government has many different views and when different people lead our country, progress from the previous person could be stopped and redirected to a different issue. This is why many solutions are left unfinished. I think that the skills I have learned through previous science and math courses such as experimentation and working through the scientific method will help me navigate through some of these issues if I do choose to pursue a science or math-
based career. Two goals that I have that I would like to develop through the knowledge I have gathered from researching these issues for this project are, spreading the word about affordable healthcare programs to patients I see at the hospital where I volunteer, and encouraging my close friends to purchase a recycling bin. These goals are important to me because it brings out some of my core values such as positivity and responsibility. I want to hold people responsible for not making the easy decision to recycle when they roll their trash can to the end of their driveway every Sunday anyway. Or to show positivity when I encourage patients, I see at the hospital to choose this healthcare program that may be more affordable for their budget.
