After taking the Self-Care assessment and reviewing materials for this week answer the following questions: 1. What is the definition of self-care outlined in the article by Butler? Self-care as defined in the article by Butler can be said in many ways and it starts by saying it was essential for the good of the therapist, the therapy, and the client. But it also gave the Oxford living dictionary definition which was, self-care is defined as “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health, well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress”. 2. According to the article; What are the two central aims of self-care? The above definition states that there are two centrals aimed at self-care. One is to limit negative outcomes and second is to promote broad positive outcomes. 3. What are the 6 domains of self-care? The 6 domains of self-care are physical domain, professional domain, relational domain, emotional domain, psychological domain, spiritual domain. 4. Briefly summarize each domain. Physical domain tends to be the needs of the physical body in order to achieve or support the best function of your body and to avoid breakdowns or deterioration within your body. Professional domain is to manage or prevent work-related stress and stressors, reduce the risk of burnout and other workplace hazards, and increase work preference and satisfaction. Relational domain is the efforts we make to maintain and enhance our personal connection to others. Emotional domain is the practice that is engaged in to safeguard against or address negative emotional experiences as well as those intended to create or make positive emotional experiences and wellbeing. Psychological domain is a practice that is concerned with pursuing and satisfying intellectual needs and purposeful and reflective efforts to understand and attend to the overall needs of the person. Spiritual domain creates a space to reflect on our own inner needs and our role or place in the world and universe. 5. Choose one domain and provide an example of a self-care activity correlating with that domain. Physical domain is the one I chose, and I would sleep more or work on my sleep schedule to help myself rejuvenate and help myself be more well rested and happy.
6. After taking the Self-care assessment; What was the process of filling out the checklist like for you? I think having to think about these things made me realize I do not do a lot of self-care based on this checklist. I do something of the things, but I need to take better care of myself of myself. 7. Were you surprised by any of your responses? If so, which ones? My surprise came from me being better in the physical self-care section than being in the other sections. I take care of myself, but I do not do all 6 domains in my self-care process. 8. In what areas are you strongest? Where is there room for growth? My professional self-care is at an all-time low, and I know if it gets lower, it could affect me in many ways, and that is one way I can grow. The areas I am strongest in are my physical and relationship self-care. I do take care of my people, so my relationship self-care is stronger. My physical condition has only gotten better in the last year because I am trying to lose weight, so that is why I am so strong on that one.
