[note: The date and times of the Zoom sessions are located on a document at the top of the
course home page)
Assignment Overview:
COVID-19 has focused world-wide attention on how we stave off infection, care for our sick, and
manage inequitable outcomes when it comes to disease and dying.
This assignment will examine a diversity of heath care systems in the Global North and evaluate
them for their inclusivity of the population they serve. It will also offer an opportunity for you to
explore more and less equitable ways of promoting wellness.
Assignment:
This assignment contains two parts:
✔
Part I: Please review each of the below websites and prepare formal, written (typed)
answers to the below questions. You can list each answer by the question number.
✔
Part II: Please be prepared to discuss your answers and reflections in a live Zoom
meeting.
To receive full credit, students must arrive to the Zoom meeting with the paper completed
and ready to hand in.
Directions will be offered in the meeting as to how to upload the assignment.
Health Care Links
(please make sure you budget enough time to view the links, take
notes, and type up formal answers to the below questions):
The US Health Care System (12 minutes)
Health Care in the United Kingdom (10 minutes)
Health Care in Switzerland (10 minutes)
Health Care in Australia (9 minutes)
Questions:
Please write formal answers to the following for submission AND bring your
answers and reflections to our live Zoom meeting. Your grade is based on your written
responses and your oral participation/discussion in the Zoom meeting. Thank you
The US Health Care System:
1. Describe the “two Americas” when it comes to US health care. Please be specific
I believe the “Two Americas” in the United States when it comes to health care are
the difference in income in certain areas. In the video, North Houston was far different
than the rest of the city. The video also stated that North Houston was made up of mostly
black residents who are not insured, and in most cases they die twenty years prior to
citizens in other parts of Houston. All in all, the “Two Americas” are the drastic difference
between income, race, and location that separate citizens in the United States.

1.
How much does the US healthcare system cost and how does this compare to the rest
of the world?
a.
The United States spends roughly three and a half trillion dollars a year on
health care. That is almost twice as much as other developed nations. On
top of that, it is almost nearly a fifth of our economy.
2.
Discuss the health outcomes of Americans compared to the outcomes in other
industrialized countries?
a.
People in the United States die more from preventable illnesses than other
industrialized countries. The reason for that is lack of health insurance.
Roughly thirty million people in the United States do not have health
insurance.
3.
What do Americans die of more frequently than residents of other countries? Why?
a.
I think Americans die more frequently than individuals in other countries
due to not having health insurance. In the video Lakeisha Parker stated that
if she had affordable health care she would have definitely gone to a doctor
sooner than she did.
4.
How does systemic racism and poverty “show up” in our health care and patient
outcomes? Please describe in detail.
a.
Systemic racism and poverty show up in our health care and patient
outcomes because in many instances people who come from poverty are
not able to pay for health insurance because it is too expensive. In result,
those people die sooner because they die of preventable illness that could
have been treated if they were able to receive medical attention.
5.
From what you learned in this assignment and your own educated guess, what American
values do you think the US Health Care system is based upon? In other words, what US
values do you see reflected in how our system works?
a.
I think that the US HealthCare System is more about making money than
making sure that everyone is healthy. In the video Dr. Ashish Jha stated
that the United States is able to have healthcare for everyone without
bankrupting the country. I believe that the United States could treat people
without requiring them to pay drastic amounts for healthcare and in result,
less people would die from curable illness.
Health Care in the UK
1. List and explain four characteristics of the UK health care system.
1. The government is the single payer for healthcare. People in the UK pay taxes to the
government, and then the government pays for healthcare.
2. The NHS spends roughly half as much as what we spend in the United States.
3. The NHS gets better outcomes than we do in the United States, and people live longer
in the UK.
4. People in the UK suffer much less of chronic diseases.
1.
According to the article, what do UK citizens value? What cultural characteristics are
reflected in their system?
a.
UK citizens value the NHS because they always know they will be cared for,
and never have to worry about going broke because they are sick. The
people of the UK even had a celebration for the 75th anniversary of the
NHS.
2.
List and explain two benefits and two drawbacks of the UK system.
1.
One main benefit of the UK system is that health insurance is not
needed to get treatment.
2.
Second benefit is that their system is very effective and people of
the UK are generally healthy.
1. One drawback of the UK system is that people get treated based on the
severity of their problem. In the video, a lady needed a knee replacement
and they kept pushing her surgery back, however if she had a heart attack
they would treat her right away.
2. Another drawback is that the system can get backed up. In the video it
stated that some people were stuck in ambulances for over an hour
because they did not have room in the hospital.
3.
How do you think issues of poverty, race, power and privilege play out in the UK system?
a.
I believe that issues of poverty, race, power, and privilege do not play a
huge role in healthcare in the UK. I believe so because everyone is treated
in the UK because they pay taxes for healthcare. The only benefit is that
some wealthy people may be able to pay for supplemental insurance to
make sure they get treated in a certain amount of time.
Health Care in Switzerland
1.
List and explain four characteristics of the Swiss health care system.
1. Everyone in Switzerland is covered when it comes to healthcare.
2. Healthcare in Switzerland is costly, but they cover everyone.
