Working with patients in a healthcare setting comes with many ethical and legal obligations that a healthcare provider has to remember to abide by. One ethical issue that may arise when working with patients would be bias and unintentionally pushing that bias on patients and having them make decisions that can be detrimental to them. According to the National Organization for Human Services, standard 7 states “Human service professionals ensure that their values or biases are imposed upon their clients” (NOHS, 2015). An example of this is a provider who is working with a patient who refuses to take medication that can be beneficial to their health and the provider pushes their personal opinion on the patient which can cross ethical boundaries and put the provider in a tough position. A legal issue that may arise when working with patients would be violating HIPAA. HIPAA was created to give all patients privacy and confidentiality with their records and all personal information. There are four important factors that make HIPAA important to patients: privacy of health information, security of health data, notifications of breaches of medical records, and the right to obtain copies of their health care data (Alder, 2023). I have a personal example of HIPAA being violated. My husband was at work and a car hit his truck door as he opened it and he hit his arm in the process. The ambulance came, EMT’s saw him, he refused to go to the hospital and continued to work. A week later, he received a letter in the mail stating that
one of the EMT’s released his personal data (address, name, and date of birth) on social media along with a few other people. The EMT violated HIPAA and was terminated but my husband’s information is still out there, and the hospital has been sued over this issue. Dealing with minors in the healthcare field can be more difficult than adults for many reasons.
