Applying Ethical Principles Ethical decision-making is something that health care professionals encounter every day.
Ethical dilemmas require health care professionals to act upon their moral principles to manage situations among patients, families, and decisions. In order to make these ethical decisions, it is imperative that professionals follow the four fundamental principles of ethics, which include, autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice. These fundamentals are used nationwide to
help health care individuals navigate making these tough decisions.
Case Study Overview
Dr. Laura Simmons is a licensed clinical psychologist. While her job entails working with different populations of clients, patients suffering from depression and anxiety is just one of
the populations she works with. She has devloped strong and trusting relationships with her clients. One client in particular, Mr. Alex Turner has been attending therapy sessions with Dr. Simmons for the last six months. Over the course of their time together, Mr. Turner has shared thoughts of anger toward his co-worker, discussing several negative encounters he has experienced. Mr. Turner has expressed acting upon this anger by harming his co-worker. The solution was not expressed in this case study, but it can be assumed that Dr. Simmons is led to believe that Mr. Turner’s repeated negative interactions with this co-worker have led him to devlope such a hatred for his co-worker. Dr. Simmons is now faced with a tough ethical dillemma. Although Dr. Simmons has devloped a trusting relationship with Mr. Turner, morals and principles must be held to a standard when handling tough ethical decisions. According to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) laws states that if the patient

has intent to harm another individual, the health care provider is to alert law enforcement, family,
or anyone that is able to prevent harm from occuring (OCR, 2022). Analysis of Ethical Issues in this Case Study Mr. Turner has expressed a strong hatred for his co-worker due to several negative interactions at work. This strong hatred has led Mr. Turner to express hurting his co-worker. To understand the situation further Dr. Simmons could ask more detailed questions to get a better understanding of Mr. Turners intentions such as how long he has been experiencing these thoughts, if he has discussed these feelings with leadership etc. While Mr. Turner most certainly may have shared these thoughts as a way of “decompressing” and “letting his anger out” when another individual is at risk of being harmed, action must be taken. Regardless, it is Dr. Simmons
responsbility to report this to the appropriate personall to prevent the situation from escalating.
Using the Ethical Decision- Making Model to Anaylze the Case Study To incorporate the ethical-decision making model into this specific dilemma, moral awareness and judgement must be understood. Dr. Simmons is aware that she has a duty to protect the public. Although she is faced with the dilemma of breaking trust with a client she has built a strong relationship with, she must make a moral decision and use her best judgement when reporting the problem. By using moral awareness, Dr. Simmons is able to protect all parties involved. Therefore moral awareness and ethical decision making tie hand and hand. While the resoltuion to this case study is not listed we can understand that if Dr. Simmons was morally aware of the situation going on and the risk involved, then ethically the correct decision to notify someone was enforced.
