Hello everyone, While introducing yourself and getting to know your client, it is important to set your boundaries. Your boundaries should be professional and appropriate (Feldman Barbera). Your first impression sets the tone of how your future relationship will be handled (Frankel, Gelman & Pastor, 2018). 1. Meeting with a client who has a powerful and overwhelming body odor and is of a different ethnic group from you. When first meeting with a client, you need to see them for who they are. This includes their culture, sex, age, religion, political beliefs, etc. (Frankel, Gelman & Pastor, 2018). Cultures may have different personal hygiene and grooming protocols. It is important to take that into consideration. You should address your expectations during your initial meeting. If the client says no or does not understand, you may have to direct them to another worker because this could cause distraction and disagreement with one another. You do not want to make your client uncomfortable, so being polite and concerned is the best way to address this situation. 2. A client invites you to dinner to say "thank you" for helping them. Even though the offer is very polite, I would kindly decline. The relationship must stay professional at all times. Being truthful is important as well. I would be honest of why I could not accept their invitation instead of making up an excuse like “Oh I would, but my niece has a basketball game.” The client is giving you another chance to set your boundaries and hopefully they do not try to overstep them in the future. If you are not truthful, then they will continue to ask you in the future. 3. Meeting with a client who curses a lot and talks very loudly and is of a different ethnic group from you. Meeting with a client who curses a lot and talks very loudly is okay. This could be how they express themselves. For the professional relationship to continue, I would address that we are in an office setting and do not want to disrupt others around us moving forward. If they say they do not want to change their behavior while in the office, I would politely tell them that we may not be able to work together in the future. Their behavior is disruptive to everyone around. I do not mind if they curse or speak loud, but I need them to limit the cursing to my office and to do it a little more quietly. 4. Meeting with a client who is engaging in illegal activities.
You want your client to be able to trust you and confide in you so they receive the most appropriate treatment. However, this is a professional setting where we, as professionals, must adhere to legal and ethical guidelines. I would discuss with the client the why of his/her actions. I would discuss other options they have instead of the illegal activities. I would also remind them that during our initial meeting we discussed what I must report. Illegal activities must be reported if they cause harm to themselves or others, or potential harm. This is an example of STANDARD 4 of the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS). If they client tells me I cannot report, I would inform them that it is law that I am a mandatory reporter just like I discussed with them in the initial meeting. References: Allen, B. (n.d.).
