Unit 3 Assignment
The two philosophies I am writing about are The Art of Self-Actualization by Abraham Maslow, and The Lessons of Self-Love by Leo Buscaglia. Abraham Maslow- The Art of Self-Actualization "
One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth.
Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again."-Abraham Maslow
Abraham Maslow said we must meet our individual needs and reach our full potential so that we can feel fulfilled. His philosophy was that self-actualizing people accept themselves and love themselves, flaws, and all. He said self-actualizing happens in stages of meeting needs. The hierarchy of needs stages Maslow describes are basic needs such as food to eat or air to breathe, safety needs such as a job, love such as family or intimate relations, self-esteem or confidence, and self-actualization such as living to the highest potential (Seaward, 2022). Leo Buscaglia- The Lessons of Self-Love
“To love others, you must first love yourself.” -Leo Buscaglia
Leo Buscaglia said that you must study love and have love for yourself if you want to have successful relationships in your life. His philosophy was that you can’t give what you don’t have (Seaward, 2022). He believed you must have a strong sense of yourself and know the difference between actual love and dependency. You must understand that love will take work. Similarities and Differences One similarity that both philosophies have is that they believe you must love yourself and
know who you are. One difference between these philosophies is that Maslow’s Art of Self Actualization says the needs are met and should be met in a “stair-step approach,” but Buscaglia’s Lessons of Self-Love is based around studying love and loving yourself.
